Anyone remember back when the NFL was about football?

Once upon a time, sports like NFL football were an escape for me. As the years go by, following sports leagues like the NFL feels more and more like following the Maury and Oprah shows. I'm getting burned out from hearing about all these social and political issues all the time. Just give the guys appropriate suspensions right away and be done with it.

I think a lot of fans who have followed pro ball for a long time feel like that. Thing is, the commercial power and broad social relevancy of the league are now such that those days aren't coming back, much like $.5/gallon gasoline.

It's a shame, but you are right. There is no end in sight for the obsession society is devoping with constantly intertwining social issues with the NFL (and other sports, NFL just seems like the worst right now). So, it's only going to get worse from here on out. The funny thing is, while the NFL is extremely worried about pleasing all of their sponsors and the PC crowd that is obsessing over their more idiodic players, I've never been closer to saying forget it and being done with the NFL than I am now due to it becoming this political circus. I would have to imagine that there are others who will also draw a line where they simply can't keep listening to this political junk 24/7 when they just want to watch some football, before they turn to other forms of entertainment.

If the NFL lost me as a fan they wouldn't even notice. I don't buy merchandise, haven't been to a live game in 13 years, and haven't paid for Sunday Ticket in 4 years. I don't see any of that changing anytime soon.

Paying for Sunday Ticket doesn't make you any more of a fan. I sure as hell don't. I use Wiziwig to watch NFL RedZone and to watch 49ers games from the east coast.

That would be refreshing, but with a million different media outlets (incl bloggers) all vying for advertising revenue...ANY source of news (especially negative) is going to make the cut.

Not in a truest sense, but to the NFL it sure as hell does make you more of a fan.

"Appropriate" is subjective. And Americans can't agree on anything these days. Even if the league gets something right there will be some special interest group trying to make hay out of it and with social media, its just that much easier.

I'm travelling over 3,000 miles to go to a 49ers game this season. I'm pretty sure that qualifies! Even if I bought a hat, or went to my local bar to watch the game, it doesn't make me any less of a fan. To get Sunday Ticket through DirecTV, you also have to pay for Al Jazeera. To me, that also makes you a supporter of terrorism.

You don't have to sell me...I agree, but at the end of the day it's about the dollar...the fans that spend the most money for the product are the best fans...thus the most "seasoned" season ticket holders for SB teams get a "shot" to buy a ticket for the game.

Precisely why I'm becoming more and more of an NHL/MLB fan. Those leagues are actually about the sport, where the NFL is about whatever gets the most pageviews. Plus with all of the pussyfoot rule changes in the NFL, hockey & baseball are becoming better to watch anyway.

I disagree wholeheartedly about MLB...but that's just my opinion.

MLB is just as bad with recent pussyfooting of rules. I can't speak on the NHL though, I don't watch or follow often.

Are you talking about the collisions rule? I personally liked that rule change, but I know there was a lot of opposition to it. I just don't see a home plate collision as a baseball play, so I don't think it took anything away from the integrity of the game. Just my opinion.

What exactly makes you disagree about the MLB? Not saying you're wrong, just curious.

I was a moderate MLB fan for years...had a season tkt pkg for the Braves, went to 40+ yr and watched a lot games on TV...the strike year that cancelled the WS really showed me that MLB nor the players gave a crap about the people supporting the product...we weren't "important" to make them figure out how to split a multimillion $ pie...that shook me as a fan of the sport.

Then imo MLB was aware PEDs were rampant in the sport. Seeing guys like Brady Anderson that were never big hitters go for 50...you know the league knew. Instead of just admitted they had a league wide PED problem and they were instituting new testing policies and and they cowardly threw the players under the bus when threaten by congress to protect their monopoly.

MLB is a great game when you really break it down (imo more interesting than football) but they've pretty much lost me completely.

Fair enough. I personally like the fact that PED's are being cracked down on now, even though there was some blatant ignorance on the part of the MLB for awhile. I like the direction the MLB is moving right now, and I hate where the NFL is going.

PEDs...with the exception a non-prescription steroids...I actually don't have a huge issue with PEDs b/c on some level performance enhancements have always been parts of sports...the issue is how do you police it? Trying to rid it is the best option.

Direction...I can't fault you for that...a lot things that I hate about other sports (guaranteed contracts, seasons too long, among them) is gradually making it's way into the NFL.

I'm still an NFL junkie of sorts, I used to spend a lot more money on pro sports...now aside from my cable bill, most of my discretionary income for sports goes to golf...i.e. I spend it on me now.
