Barring any setbacks, Bowen said he will rejoin his teammates as soon as he is eligible to come off the physically-unable-to-perform list on Oct. 13. The swelling in his surgically-repaired right knee has vanished and he said he feels completely healthy.
“I’ll just keep working every day, just counting down the weeks until it’s time to join my brothers on the D-line,” Bowen said. “I’m feeling great.”
Bowen injured his right knee in October and underwent microfracture surgery to repair torn cartilage in that knee in December. He spent the entirety of training camp and the preseason doing individual drills with a trainer on an auxiliary field.
Bowen said the absence of swelling marked a turning point in his recovery.
Who will the Redskins cut? They'll have to make a move with Brandon Meriweather returning this week. They have to activate him off the suspended list, which means someone from the 53-man roster will have to go. They just signed Akeem Davis off the practice squad last week, but I wonder what will happen with Bacarri Rambo. The Redskins trusted him enough to start him in place of Meriweather. But there's no way they can trust him downfield after the first two weeks. He was benched in the second half against Jacksonville. Rambo looked better this summer, but it hasn't translated to the regular season. Today will be an interesting day. They also might work out more quarterbacks, or, perhaps, sign one of the three -- B.J. Coleman, Ricky Stanzi and Pat Devlin -- they worked out last week to the practice squad.
The biggest test for a professional backup quarterback is to come in off the bench without those first team reps in practice all week. Scout team reps just aren't the same. Coming in cold and playing hot is not an easy task. Cousins aced that test. So did the former pro quarterback and current head coach. Jay Gruden was as composed as Kirk Cousins was and this had as much to do with our success on offense as anything Kirk Cousins did.
One thing that can be said without hesitation is that Jason Hatcher disrupts things on the defensive line in a way that the Redskins have needed for years. When the Redskins signed Hatcher during free-agency the hope was that he could give added pressure from the defensive end position and allow Ryan Kerrigan and Brian Orakpo better lanes to get to the quarterback. So far that has been a success.
While several players have played well through two games there are two who stand out the most. Outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan and inside linebacker Keenan Robinson. Kerrigan, who registered 4 sacks against the Jags on Sunday, is on the brink of being a massive superstar in the NFL. Keenan Robinson is finally healthy after two straight seasons of injury issues. Robinson has been one of the surprises of the 2014 season thus far. Many knew he had the skills to take over at middle linebacker, but few thought he would do so with ease.
