Ken Rosenthal reports the Giants have picked up Dan Uggla. I don't know any details, Major or minor league, but I do think it is a low risk move. I mean, the Giants are basically taking a chance on a once good player with the Braves paying his salary.

Nice low risk/potentially high reward move

Agreed. If it doesn't work out, they can just dump him with no penalty and Uggla can go play in Japan next season with the Braves still paying him 13 million.

Well, there really aren't a lot of trades or big news in baseball right now. This is the biggest news in baseball so far today.

Hicks had a nice start, but he's batted .140/.253/.238 in 167 PA since the beginning of May. His line currently sits at .162/.280/.319.

Of course, Uggla does have a line of .162/.241/.231 (33 OPS+!) this year. And Uggla's never exactly been known for his defense. Uggla might be better than Hicks going forward, but I wouldn't exactly call Uggla an "upgrade."

Maybe a change of scenery will help Uggla. He looks done to me, but the extreme low risk is worth the potentially high reward IMO.

His swing is full of mechanical flaws. It's not only an extreme upper cut, but he loops into the uppercut which causes him to swing around pitches or weakly pop them up. Greg Walker has tried for 2 years to correct it, but it hasn't worked. Maybe the Giants' hitting coach will get him to listen and follow through.

Have you seen how the Giants hit?

I refuse to watch Hunter Pence at the plate. It's an abomination.

I'm just waiting for "Uggla will be our Pat Burrell this season" from mouthy Giants fans.

Yeah, the Braves played both series with the Giants when they looked unbeatable, and they opened up a real can of whoop ass on us.

But they seem to be struggling lately.

There are already comments in that vein on the Giants boards.

Still baffling to me how literally THE WORST offensive player in the major leagues this season is getting so much attention and why any team in contention would want the distraction.

I guess they remember the bat he used to have. He's a few years removed now though. Not like this season is out of the blue. He was almost as bad last season, and piss poor the year before.

The Giants are trying something new. In the past, they always picked up guys several years removed from their prime to play shortstop; second base is uncharted territory.
