Shanahan just spoke. He has delayed RG3's participation in 11 on 11 by one day and reconfirmed he will not play in preseason. Says he has no problem with RG3 wanting to get out there, but he is sticking to the original plan agreed to by Andrews, Shanahan, and RG3.

If I was a Skins fan I would appreciate him wanting to get back out there but he needs to chose his words more carefully.

He needs to just borrow Marcus Lattimore's lines and just say "Hey I feel and want to get out there and practice but coming off a serious injury I respect the coaches and doctors decision to hold me out until they feel the time is right."

Shanahan got roasted for that playoff game for being too reckless and it's not like RGIII didn't take a indirect swipe or two at Shanahan either so he shouldn't complain when he wants to be careful and make sure the knee is good to go.

i dont blame anyone in this situation about their stance

RG3 wants to play and is probably ready to play

shanahan got abused for the way the playoff game was handled and he is playing it safe as he should

DR. andrews probably feels the pre season games arent worth the risk and of course he knows the medical side .

Once again, if the biggest thing to come out of this is.. the QB wants to play and the coach is telling him to calm down... Non issue.

Come week one RG3 will be on the field with a serious jonesing to prove that he is back 100%. This could be a bad thing as I feel he might press a little. But if he is actually back 100%, the Eagles will likely get embarrassed. And to a point I want RG3 playing with a chip on his shoulder a little.

Shark, I agree. My only concern is how this is being played out in the press as opposed to behind the coach's office door. Apparently its not an issue with Shanahan, or so he says, so thats good. Who knows, maybe they have had this discussion in private.

I would just prefer that RG3 choose his words a bit more carefully. I would hate to see a rift develop between RG3 and the coaching staff that would ultimately affect the whole team, thus our chance for success.

Dude, this reminds me of Jordan when he was coming back from injury and he was saying one thing and the coaches another. At the end of the day this wont be an issue.

Hopefully once the real games start, this will all be forgotten. Of course, the press doesn't help. They want to parse everything he says and play it like there is a controversy.

Not worried about the press. RG3 and Shanahan know what the deal is. RG3 said himself that he can not like the situation but still respect the coaches decision. Would you rather he say one thing and mean another like McNabb? Honesty is refreshing.

I'd sit him until the opener, but 3rd pre season game isn't that far off from the opener.

:agree:

i dont see him needing to choose his words more carefully . he knows his body and he probably is ready in my opinion .

however the med staff and the coaches are doing the right thing

my own experience is that i was always better and could do things BEFORE the doctors allowed

better safe then sorry

the kid is 24 . he has got an itch .

Id like to see him play in the final 2 games if he is as ready as he says.
He needs to get the feel of real game action.

I like that he wants to play. I want him to have that drive.

That's what I'm saying. Champions have to be held back. Champions don't just happily wait on the sideline until the doctor says so. You have to tie them to the bench and take their helmet away.

I love the desire he has to play and no problem with him saying so but it's up to Shanny to hold the reins in on him.

Which is exactly why Shanahan needs to stand his ground on this one. I truly admire RG3's toughness in this situation. However - they will be setting a bad precedent if the team simply caves into this demand. They might be right or wrong in terms of holding him out in the preseason, but they need to show that they have some control in this situation.

If they cave in then perhaps RG3 may exert similar pressure in the future. If - God forbid - he sustains some type of injury that warrants keeping him out a qtr or a few games he may feel that he should keep playing (like he did in the Ravens & Seahawks games). He might also feel that once he feels comfortable he can once again take on defensive players in certain situations instead of running out of bounds or sliding.

I just want the structure to be setup as intended with the coaches & doctors having the last say. This needs to somewhat be the case to ensure a relatively lengthy career for RG3 which is much more important than ensuring that he is 100% effective against the Eagles in week one. I am pretty confident that they will work this out together. I also think some folks here completely overrate the importance of preseason games.

No - you are absolutely correct. I swear ESPN has a goal that every hour they have a story on at least two of the following people:

RG3
LaBron
A-Rod
Johnny Manziel
Tiger Woods

They have truly gone downhill over the last several years to the point that on-field results take a back seat to anything that remotely rings of controversy. They are the TMZ of sports reporting.

I'm curious if every starting QB has a presser after every practice. Seems to me that RG3 needs to just play football. I'm so sick of hearing during every presser who did his hair or where you can get a hat like the one he was wearing on the sidelines. However, those are the questions that don't create contreversy. Funny, in his press conference yesterday he said he would be in 11 on 11 drills and at Shanahans presser he said that has been pushed back a day. Seems like a little flexing of the muscles again. We saw this with Haynesworth. Man I hope this don't get ugly if he doesn't start game one.

The league has rules that players are supposed to be made available for interviews after practice.

Shanahan is not RG3's boss. RG3 is more valuable to the franchise than he is. If he is cleared he should get some live action to be prepared for the season.

What's funny is that the majority of the national media think that it's no big deal. The local media seems to be so starved to create a story or be important, that they are the ones behind the non-stop push on this topic.
