The Finals are set, so now would be the time to start the Smythe Watch thread. Right now it's looking like Kovalchuk and Quick are the leading contenders, but Kopitar has been absolutely dominant, Brown has been a flop solid, errr, rock solid captain for LA, and Parise has been extremely clutch.

At this point, I am not even considering anyone but Jonathan Quick. He has been phenomenal.

Although Parise's been pretty damn good too.

He has been head and shoulders above anyone else, IMO... but a strong Finals by Kopitar or Kovalchuk could seal the deal for them.

Kovalchuk and Conn Smythe in the same sentence a couple of years ago would have seemed spoken in the Bizzaro world.

I'd say he's bought into the Devil's system. Not only is he producing offensively but he's been a solid two way player as well. Funny how you don't hear Cherry and the other knuckle-draggers talking about that, all they want to talk about are lazy Ruskies OV and Semin.

If Quick stays above .940, I say it's his, win or lose. Worst case scenario, he finishes with a 12-6 record; that's what the Devils are at right now.

I will say this, if Marty wins another Cup but the losing goalie gets the Conn Smyth again, I will go apeshit

Hey, don't forget: Sometimes he loses the Cup to Conn Smythe goalies too.

Maybe if Marty wants a Conn Smythe he should play a little better...

:ss:

I'm just saying...one of the things was that the Ducks werent scoring and JS NEEDED the shutouts for his team to win... well the Kings have scored more goals per game than the Devils, so that can be a factor this time.

I think Brodeur being tied for 7th in playoff save percentage among starters and Quick being .023 points ahead is the bigger road block to Brodeur's Conn Smythe chances right now than the Kings scoring 2.87 goals-per-game to the Devils' 2.72.

Devils score less, sounds like Marty is more important to me, but I'm biased.

I think the difference is reflected in their respective 12-2 and 12-6 records.

^^ this

and 12-2 while running a sub 10% power play percentage and 91.8 PK % (average at home, but crushing the PK at 95.1% on the road) -- so they aren't winning on the easy goals, and aren't giving up any either. That 91.8% PK can't be all the 4 in front of Quick. He's gotta be making the timely saves when needed, which will win him a Conn Smythe if he does if in this series too.

The Devils would have to dominate this series for quick not to be a finalist for that, win or lose.
