Davis Mills actually put up decent numbers last year. I think he'll take the next step this year. I am surprised that Texans / Browns game was not a scheduled a prime time game.
I'm suprised it wasn't scheduled for Week 3 or 4 to make sure Watson wasn't available...but that would be tampering.

Right,

  • At the start of this process, the NFL is the DA offering Watson a plea deal.
  • Watson turns down the plea deal and opts to go to Trial.
  • Watson wins a better deal at Trial.
  • The NFL wants to appeal the decision to a higher Court.
  • But here is the rub, ....Goodell is the Judge in that Higher court.

.

Florio from PFT is saying Goddell is assigning another "independent" party to handle the appeal

If you stop thinking about the NFL as the NFL and instead think of them as any other company you can have a contract clear as day but if you're not managing the employees within the text of that contract or within the spirit of it thats the challenge.

More than a few have pointed how arbitrary his decisions are.

Further when you hold your players to a conduct policy for image reasons and yet allow your owners to do the same thing with no recourse......well it's a problem
None of those are legal arguments. Again, explain to me where he is doing something different than the CBA allows. Taking this to Federal court requires a specific legal argument. As long as he follows the CBA there is no argument to be made. Your thoughts that his decisions are arbitrary does not meet that requirement. That's like a judge that gives two different sentences for similar issues (or in this case not even similar at all which makes it even harder). As long as the rulings are within the boundaries of the rules set forth there is no legal argument that will even have a chance to win in Federal court. I don't even think the court will take the matter up

"Hello ACME Appeals, this is Roger Goodell, we'd like to hire you for an appeal. There will be many other appeal opportunities in the future if you know what I mean."

Not in December lol. It would've been replaced with a game with playoff implications instead anyway.

Right... The point that game was scheduled so late in the season was because of the pending suspension. The schedule writers wanted a Browns / Texans matchup.

Ironic that the judge argued that the NFL is attempting to do just that. Hand down a penalty outside the parameters of the "sentencing guidelines" (to use your judge analogy)

I mean...if anyone has actually handled unemployment and EEO cases like I have (on the company's behalf) I'd love to hear how it is there cannot be legal ramifications for acting within a CBA but applying penalties in an uneven or inconsistent way.

Easy. Nearly all the precedents involved 1 victim (Winston, Zeek) or 2 (Big Ben).

Watson has 24. Even if you only go by the 4 presented by the NFL - the average suspension was about 4-4.5 games (Winston 3, Zeek 6, iirc) - Ben got 6, I think...so it's around 4, or 4.5 games per accusation/victim/complaint. 4 x 4 = 16, 4x4.5= 18...either way, you're looking at nearly a year suspension.

That completely falls within the parameters set forth. Even if you went with just 3 games, you'd still be looking at the 12 games that the NFL was trying to settle with Watson for. So, it makes total sense that since he did not agree to the "lesser" amount the NFL was willing to go for, that upon appeal, the NFL is going to take a bigger swing - if for no other reason, in hopes of at least coming back with the 12 game suspension.

Not to mention, at least in Ben and Watson's case, there was remorse for the actions. Watson has steadfastly refused to admit that he has committed any wrong-doing. In the case of Zeke, wasn't it found out the lady was a con/liar? (I didn't follow that too closely, so honest question as I don't know).

Long story short (too late, I know) there is plenty of room within the precedent to suspend Watson for 12 games up to a full season, IMO. I think it just depends on how you want to look at the actions (all lumped as 1 action, or multiple actions with multiple victims).

I have ZERO sympathy for Watson.

But this outcome unfortunately puts Watson in a slightly differently light.
Now all of the NFL detractors will paint them as vindictive.

Watson getting 6 games was a small victory in the PR front for him.

Watson getting only 6 games was a joke, and listening to wind most feel the same as I do.

Now the NFL could go too hard on him and change many minds.
