I'll be taking a mini vacation next weekend. It's part of my bucket list to see the major battlegrounds/forts and other sites from the Revolutionary War. I'm starting with the site in Mobile, and might make it to Jacksonville to see the only two from East/West Florida (at that time). Next up is SC for me.

Since there's only a few there I'll be checking out Ft. Sumpter and other general historic areas, plantations, etc. I'm also staying in the French Quarter - which I hear is quite a bit less fragrant and more colorful than the last one I visited.

Any other suggestions I should do/see/visit while I'm there? Thanks in advance.

A tour of Middleton Place is interesting - the oldest cultivated gardens in US - historical home of a signer of the Declaration of Independence.

A trip to Savannah is about 100 miles - and a more interesting place.

Queology is very good food - but expensive so go to the Brown Dog Deli. Lewis BBQ for some good eats.

Of course, you will want a round of golf at Charleston National

Worth your time to walk through the Slave Market. It's mostly tourist trap stuff, but you can find decent stuff from time to time. Last time I was there I got Billy Gibbons' autograph. He said "You were the only person who recognized me all day"

If you are in Charleston for any length of time I recommend Mac's Place on East Bay St for lunch at least one day. It's a Chicago themed restaurant, but it's one of my favorite places. It provides a good deviation from seafood.

But make sure to go over and eat on Shem Creek. It doesn't really matter where, they all offer good regional seafood. And if you want BBQ go to Rodney Scott's. The Scott Family are BBQ royalty.

If you are a history buff Patriot Point is worth checking out. It's not Revolutionary War, but it's very informative.

You could spend a week in SC alone for the Revolutionary War. Camden, Cowpens, Waxhaws, Star Fort to just name a few.

I always recommend spending a few bucks for a carriage ride around any city.

You always get a few unknown facts.

Did it in New Orleans and learned where , "I wouldn't touch that with a ten foot pole" originated. Yep, they put dead bodies in crypts and moved the rotting one around with a ten foot pole to avoid the smell. And actually picked them up when the pole to finally bury them.

Charleston has open horse drawn carriages. Wife, grandson and myself took the ride and it was interesting, fun and educational.

You seem to know what you want to do. Don't know if you know what's available, but

Explore Charleston
  • First White House of the Confederacy.
  • Belle Meade Plantation.
  • Belle Mont Mansion.
  • Beauvoir: The Jefferson Davis Home and Presidential Library.
  • Fort Sumter Battlefield.
  • The Problem in Charleston Harbor.
  • Naval Tech During the Civil War

Speaking of Savannah, the house where my mother was raised in East Hartford, CT was moved there. The age of the timbers in the home made the modified structure in Savannah the oldest in town. Check out the video and the article.

Who moves a home from CT the GA?

Their driving range is kinda short, but I'll just leave the 7 iron at home.

My wife and I went that way a few years back. A few of the highlights for us were an evening boat ride with dinner and music as you cruise around the area. Gives you a different view of the city in the evening with all the lights. Another would be some of the tours of the forts were pretty awesome. Obviously the big one being Fort Sumter. I think we spent half a day walking around that one. My wife would say the time we spent searching for lighthouses in the area was one of her favorites, but she loves lighthouses. I would definitely recommend the walking tours if you can handle a lot of walking more so than the bus tours. We did the bus tour and while we got a lot of info out of it, not exactly fun to just go cruising by and barely catch a glimpse of anything.

Never been to South Carolina... I was going to go there as a kid to Myrtle Beach, SC but on the morning my friends family was to pick me up to head there I got sick.

I am heading to Pittsburgh, PA in a few weeks. I am sure I will find something to do. I want to get to South Carolina eventually. Been to North Carolina. Let me know how you like it.

Be ready to see LOTS of Black and Gold gear….you know, kind of like Iowa.

Go to the top of Mt Washington for a great view over downtown Pittsburgh. It’s an impressive city, I think one of the most underrated cities in the US.

LGM, this company does a really nice job with educational tours. Now they are doing online lectures, and one later this week is on Charleston. Might be worth $26 to get a preview of things you my want to see.

Was stationed there for 2 years in the early 90’s. I’d love to go back to visit. I don’t feel like I appreciated the history of that place in my early 20’s.

Btw, thanks for the tips all. Got more in than I thought, even with the daily afternoon thunderstorms. Its like Houston, except has charm, elegance, and a breeze that will have you saying things like "veranda, piazza, and "I do declare" more than Springsteen at the customs office on a trip from Russia.

we're staying downtown Friday, Saturday and Sunday... v'got reservations at Charleston Grill on Sunday... looking for preferences/suggestions for a good breakfast restaurant and dinner recommendation for Saturday night... we're leaning Magnolia's, High Cotton, SNOB or Peninsula Grill. we've not been to town since a funeral and Spoleto, 2004 so we're a bit rusty. tia

Any of the ones you shared are good. Last time I went I stayed at Market Pavillion and stayed and ate around there most of the time. Burwells?? Was really good too. Most of the shrimp I ate was in Myrtle Beach though. High cotton, mags, SNOB were all great.

:eyebrows: Market Pavilion... very nice

We're staying down the street at the Vendue...
will probably forego Saturday dinner for numerous rooftop ginny tonix...
would try (if such was possible) to cop a quart of take out she crab soup from SNOB... lol, lap it up sitting on the curb.
