I don't think it's all that bad, Benning did manage to shed some bad contracts, but losing the 1st rounder tonight was a big price to pay. He's rolling the dice that OEL can bound back and Garland can put up some nice numbers in Vancouver.

it was short term shit. but it was a lot of shit.
gives us the cap space to get Petey and Hughes done without needing to stick to bridge deals.

and the buyout calculator on OEL apparently isn't too bad a couple of years from now if needed.
I don't recall him being quite as dogshit as the graph Dash showed.
He was perhaps overwhelmed as a #1 shutdown guy, but can hopefully put in good minutes as a 3/4 guy.
Edler's replacement, at x-times the price.

And I think a good guy to pair with Hughes on the Power Play.

It's much but its balanced

I don't think it does though. They dumped $12 mil in cap space this year and added $7.3 mil in OEL. Garland is arb eligible and coming off back to back pro-rated 25 goal seasons. Say he gets $3.5 mil/yr (I think he'll get above $4 mil but..) that's a total savings of $1.22 mil in cap space. And if OEL sucks as much as the fancy stat guys seem to assure everyone he does (I honestly have no effin idea) they're weighed down by a terrible contract for far longer than 1 year even if they do buy him out in 3 or 4.

It's an extra million but as before the Canucks' cap space for next season is going to come from buying out Virtanen, getting rid of Holtby and trading Schmidt and right now only one of those things is really certain (I hope, for their sake lol).

For what AZ charged other teams to take contracts that were longer than any of the ones they took back today, and factoring in the Canucks took one with a huge cap hit and lots of cash still on it, OEL or Garland would have to play very, very well (or alternatively, Garland would have to fetch a good return at some point) for this not to look awful in retrospect.

Assuming that Zack MacEwan and Matthew Highmore can play regular 4th line minutes (?), Podkolzin can play regular top 9 minutes, Rathbone can play regular bottom pair minutes, Ferland is LTIR and Virtanen is bought out I'm counting 9 forwards and 4 defencemen signed for next season with $21.5 million to spend. They have 5 RFA's they likely want to sign, two of whom will cost $14 mil combined minimum even on bridges (using Barzal as a comp for Pete and just guessing Hughes will cost around the same).

They could definitely be worse off but they're going to need 2 or 3 bargain contracts to fill out the bottom 6 and get some depth on D.

I just think Vancouver would have been better off riding out this year with Beagle, Roussel, and Louie and keeping the 9th overall pick as well as the picks in 2022. However, I'm not in the industry
