The offense just isnt going to get them there unless Tua really balls out. Not bringing in a solid RB this offseason and hoping that a bunch of bodies like Brieda and Brown can run behind a sub-par OL was a huge mistake.

If you want to play ball control offense and lean on a good defense, you need a bell cow.

One of the best moves, and subsequently one of the worst misses, of this draft was watching Denver leap in front of Miami for Williams. Miami needed to assure that they got him IMO if they really wanted to compete this year. He is EXACTLY what they needed.

You put Denver in the ACFE and Miami in the AFCW and then start placing teams that are and arent going to make the playoffs give you a more accurate representation of where Miami really stands right now.

The Fins chose Holland who is a ball hawk at safety with that pick. He's a versatile playmaker. I don't think they will regret that pick. I like Williams too however I think RB Doaks is underrated and their current group of RBs has good speed and pass catching ability. Also, the Fins are building a very good oline which helps the running game.

Making high draft picks on OL....and it becoming a very good OL are two entirely different things.

My Vikings are going to be starting 2 1st round picks, 2 2nd round pick and a 3rd round pick in all likelihood this coming fall. And I fully expect it to be one of the poorer OL's in the league....yet again.

Hunt, Austin showed enough last year to still have hopes for them obviously. But thinking that it is going to be a good OL heading into next season is more wishful thinking than anything.

.....

And Doaks is kind of what I am talking about. Teams like Miami continually play the "RB's don't matter" card and think that they can cobble together a quality backfield with late round picks and cast offs from other teams. That is up until the point that they realize that doesn't actually work unless you get incredibly lucky and end up taking one early in the draft.

The whole theory that RB's dont matter and just take them late is the biggest myth living in the NFL draft world still. The only starting RB's in this league that are actually worth a damn that I can think of in the entire league that weren't taken in the first 75 picks of the draft are Kamara and Jones (Green Bay). Everyone else was a top 75 pick (sure I am missing one or two....but not many).

How much you want to bet Miami takes a RB in the next 2 drafts in the top 3 rounds? That is the route they eventually have to go to answer the hole at the position. Williams was the PERFECT RB to take this year and just cross that off the list. It wont be every year moving forward that you see a RB like in that position. And he was the perfect guy to take pressure off Tua this coming season.

With Fuller and Waddle on the field, it should move safeties away from the LOS. Ahmed and Gaskin both averaged over 4 YPC last season.

Are we really trying to make a conclusion about Tua at this point in his career? He played half the season going 6 and 3. He was coming off a devastating hip injury. Thankfully he looks ready to go this offseason. This year will tell us a lot more than last year.

At Bama he was a clutch QB who was known for his accuracy. We saw that last year. He has needed to adjust to better defenses in the NFL. He is making progress.

RE the Fins and the AFC East: All of the teams got better. I think it usually takes 2 to 3 years to judge a draft. That said, the Fins were a borderline playoff team that just added some really good talent. I think the rookies could contribute early on in their careers.

This division will be competitive and a challenge for other teams outside the division when they play AFC East teams.
Yup! Agree.

I stopped at 31 for the top rushers in the league. You can argue they arent worrh a squat. But yeah.

Thats 16 guys. 2 of the top 31 are qbs.

as for the others. One can also argue. That the teams with those rbs, arent always the greatest or just recently have been better. Although this years top ten rushers correlated success Much More than last year.

I was actually wrong on Kamara. I always thought he was a 4th rounder. He was the 67th overall.

Like I said top 75 picks. Montgomery, Hunt, Gore, Gibson, Drake, Singletary all on your list were drafted before that.

So really that narrows your list down to not much at all that is worth talking about as being an average RB not drafted in the top 75.

Long and short is that if you want a RB that you can say is your starter and not have to worry about it in the future, you draft them in the 1st- early 3rd round or else you will be looking again next year. And that is ESPECIALLY true in a league where signing FA RB's is usually folly.

I agree. The sweet spot is to position yourself to do it in the 2nd or early 3rd.

As a Steeler fan I bet you a little perturbed by the Harris selection. Steeler should have traded down a little (if it was possible) and risked him being gone and having to go with Williams instead. Either one of those 2 would have answered their need adequately.

Yep. I love harris. I think hes a beast. I am pulliny for him . But wasnt
My choice. Sadly here in pgh the fans and media have been banging for a round 1 rb for a few years.

Yeah, I'm not fully on board the 'RBs dont matter' train. I just don't think they should be drafted top 20 pretty much ever.

I think you're starting to see the league settle into the 25-40 range being where the top RBs are expected to go. Personally I think that should drop about another 20 or so picks but that might take some time. People seem to forget that teams are often drafting to keep their job so the allure of the instant impact of an RB is always there.

I like what Miami did by building draft capital. They haven't been relevant in decades so I'm rooting for this to work. But it all comes down to Tua and I too have my doubts. I think they will be pretty good but contenders is a reach.

The best quarterbacking I saw from Miami last season was when Marcus Mariotta played in relief of Tua. He looked polished as hell.

Maybe it was backup (fitz)magic but he looked seriously good.

All rides on Tua. With 7 playoff teams now the AFC East can possibly put forth 3 playoff teams. Patriots might be the weakest of the three but I don't know. It will be one of the more interesting divisions to follow in 2021.

Good for the Dolphins now that they are an interesting team. They have been the least interesting team in the league for nearly 2 decades since Ricky Williams retired the second time. Not anymore though.

It was Fitzpatrick. Marita was on the Raiders.

Will be good competition, Flores doing great job. The Bills are solid and BB thinks he has built once again a good team. And, the Jets will continue to suck as NJ’s second team.

@Paolo305613 is the resident expert on anything dolphin. He has no respect for Tua.
I think @FlyerFinFan @BigFin @FanofPelicans @psaboy @EVille3 would all likely agree"
I have no idea why Paolo hates Tua this much. He's a good kid and has promise. Even when he played very well it didn't matter to him. If he ends up being a very good game manager he can have success as they are building a solid D with enough depth around him to succeed. Either way no reason to hate the man. I see the team coming together quicker than I thought but it still may take another year or so to gel. Either way the playoff hunt last year helped them gain experience and being in the race this year would taken them a step closer. I see no reason why they can't take that next step with the added talent and another year under their belts. That goes for the coaching staff too. Will be a fun ride. I just hope that Paolo doesn't take a shit on Tua's lawn...

I don't think that Miami purposely didn't draft a RB the past few years. It may be further down the list in a tie breaker but they've also shown to go BPA and stick to their board. Also makes sense to get a RB when you are closer to contending as the shelf life can be so small. IE. Picking a bell cow last year would have been a waste as they weren't winning a bowl anyway. I could see it next year but even still I'd be surprised if they took one first round unless they traded back in.

18/20 of the leaders in carries last year were 1st, 2nd or 3rd round picks.

One was replaced by a first round pick last week, the other was filling in for a former first rounder.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Miami follow suite next draft. Best skill position to draft early when it comes to immediate impact imo. And the best one to save for when you’re truly filling out a roster that will compete.
