Surprised there hasn't been a playoff format change thread

So here it is.

Maybe it's not a big deal to everyone, so not much to argue about?

7 teams from each conference are now playoff teams, only the #1 seed gets a bye, the other 3 division winners play the 3 wild cards.

I'm cool with it.

Will there ever be a division where all 4 teams make the playoffs (all 3 WCs)? Probably technically impossible.

I'm good with it. 2 major positives and 1 minor negative.

Positives

1) More playoffs implications games late in the season with only 1 team getting the bye

2) More football WC weekend. The fans win. Triple header on Saturday and Sunday. How can you be mad?

Negative

The years where you have 2 teams tied for the same record and the bye week comes down to some silly tiebreaker rule will be a bummer

Not a fan of it. Recent history has trended towards those top 2 teams getting huge advantage with the bye and now the top seed is going to be at an extremely large advantage.

Its interesting because its been very rare in recent years that a team has reached the Super Bowl when playing on Wild Card Weekend. I think the 2012 Ravens were the last team to get there without a bye. So now that only 1 seed gets a bye in each conference it will be interesting to see if that still holds true.

Yes technically impossible? Or yes it will happen?

I don't see how the 2, 3, and 4 teams in a division can all have better records than the remaining 9 non-division winners. They play each other twice each year, and those other nine surely can't all suck. Let's say that division has every team go 1-1 vs each other. So that's 3 losses each and 3 wins each. Wouldn't those three all have to go like at least 7-3 in their non division games?

I'm not going to figure out the math but I guess it's technically possible but practically no way.

It is possible. Unlikely but possible if the last place team goes 8-8

So all the other 9 teams are 8-8 (losing tiebreakers) or worse? Yes technically possible, but about as likely as two teams going 16-0 one year.

It's mathematically possible. NFC West would have as good a shot as any division to claim first dibs.

8-8 has a shot at a WC in this system. It would be really unlikely for all 4 to make it, but it's not impossible.

It nearly happened in 2013 (in terms of record) in the NFC west.

Seattle 13-3
San Fran 12-4
Zona 10-6
Rams 7-9

Of course, a lot needs to happen in the other divisions for all 4 to make it but I think it is possible. That year they nearly had the perfect formula for the other 12 teams in the NFC. The NFC South ruined everything that year.

I really haven't given it much thought but off the top of my head, I would think a tie game or 2 coming into play might increase the chances of one div getting 4 teams in. One of you math geniuses figure it out though. I'm way too tired amd lazy.

2014 AFC North came close too
4th place Cleveland was 7-9 & last wild card was 9-7 (although there were a couple of 9-7 teams)

So you have 4 teams in a division. They beat up on each other and split all their games against each other. That is 3-3.

Now, you have well, I don't know, are we going to a 17 game format? If so, you have 11 other non-division games, and that division is just heads and shoulders above everyone else. They win all their games against everyone else.

Every team in that division would be 14-3. I can see how all 4 could make it, very unlikely though.
