Figured I'd start the new year thread off.

Last week I bought a used Hawk model 981( Rem 870 knockoff) 12 guage shotgun from a kid who was raising money to buy a black powder rifle. I offered the kid $150, for $10 more he threw in a saddle mount rail and red dot scope.

Today I went to BassPro to pick up some magazines and ammo for the AR. Didn't get the magazines, but picked up 250 rounds of 223 and 9mm, plus a Kimber Micro 9 CSE to replace the Bersa Thunder as my pocket carry.

Gun show this Saturday. Payday is Wednesday. If that's not a sign, I don't know what is.

Was looking at new pistols, wanted a 1911 but decided on the FN FNX-45, Full size 45 ACP with 15 round mags.

I have had my eye on this flavor of 12 gauge shotgun for a while. Glad I found one locally... Molot VEPR 12. Stock for now, but goodies are on the way.

Looks like ammo is in low supply... Although I did find multiple boxes of #4 Turkey shot that worked great for some break in shooting.

I am so glad I purchased my Springfield XD-S Mod.2 45 ACP with tritium nights sight back in January before the Coronavirus gun buying frenzy. I got it at a great price: $350 with free shipping.

Very nice... I've got this crappy Taurus 709 that I carry daily. I'd much rather have a XD-S 9mm instead. May I have the website that you purchased that from. Maybe after the virus is done, they'll re-stock & go back on sale.

I bought it online from Sportsman's Outdoor Superstore which is one of the more popular web firearm retailers... SOS also features free shipping on firearms.

ATTENTION: I just looked and SOS has the Springfield XD-S Mod.2 in 9mm with tritium night sights available now for $399.99

You might want to jump all over that... it probably won't last very long.... it's now 5:20am eastern and still available.

NOTE: The same model Springfield (XDSG9339BT) is also currently available at the same price at GunBuyer... they also feature free shipping.

So, I got some goodies in the mail last week.... 2 - 10 round metal magazines (I also got a composite 20 magazine too), a Molot Replica Muzzle Break and new charging knurl extension. I'm waiting on a Blue Force Gear AK sling.

Ruger - SP101, 357 Mag, 2.25\

I just bought this guy. After the lifetime warranty, taxes, and FFL it’s $600. It will be interesting to see how this goes with the COVID-19 stuff going on.

VERY nice! I love the shade/color contrast of the lighter finish trigger and hammer...gorgeous! I also like the wooden grip panel inserts...personally I would prefer a lighter colored wood to better contrast with the darker revolver, but something like that can always be changed in the future if you desire. Aftermarket SP101 grip panel inserts are fairly inexpensive... LS Grips offers some very nice lighter shade maple grip panel inserts:

Wood Ruger Sp101 Grip Inserts – LS Grips

Chig's Grips also has wood grip panel inserts and they can also install Ruger emblems on their grip panel insert offerings.

SP101 Grip Panels | Chig's Grips

Ammo is currently hard to find, but I see that Outdoor Limited has some Hornady Critical Duty and Critical Defense .357 Magnum ammo still available at the moment.
357 Ma357 Mag Ammo | Bulk Quantity 357 Mag Ammo For Sale

Again, very nice revolver choice!

Thanks.

There are so many options it’s a little overwhelming. The Pachmyr grips work as well correct? I suppose that’s another option. I might roll stock for a little while just to see what I like and don’t like about it. I will eventually be looking at finding a better grip and thanks for the links.

Hornady Critical Defense is what I generally like to have on hand for home defense with my P-07 and I’ll probably stick with that. Maybe the FFL I will pick it up at will have some on hand. I suppose I have the option of .38 special too.

This was my first pistol purchase.... 29 years old with 29 year old Pachmayr grips. Model 66 S&W snub. They make good grips no doubt.

You may actually decide to stick with the existing grips because lots of folks seem to like the standard SP101 grips...folks just switch out the panel inserts to something more visually pleasing to their taste.

But yes, Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips that I have on my Ruger LCR .38 Special are very good, and Pachmayr also makes them for the SP101:
Diamond Pro Series Grips | Pachmayr Revolver Grips

I have purchased quite a bit of ammo online from Outdoor Limited, they generally have very good prices. I wouldn't hesitate to buy some of the recently re-stocked .357 Magnum Hornady Critical Defense ammo from them ASAP, it probably will not last long. That would be good ammo choice to use in your SP101 for concealed carry.

I wouldn't use .357 Magnum for home defense though... too much of a blinding flash and very loud blast to use indoors in confined rooms & hallways... .38 special ammo would be best for in-home defense.

I carry Barnes 125 grain TAC-XPD in my 3 inch barrel Kimber .357 Magnum, but ammo is difficult to come by nowadays, so it would be a good idea to jump all over that Hornady Critical Defense .357 ammo.

Here is a link to the Lucky Gunner ballistic test results for various .38 Special and .357 Magnum ammo brands/types. Keep in mind that an expansion of 1.5 times is considered adequate for defense ammo. So.... .357 inch times 1.5 = .5355 inch.... which means for .38 Special & .357 Magnum, you are looking for ballistic test results of expansion of at least .53 of an inch diameter for a given ammo brand/type.

I kicked around the idea of the hammerless Kimber 3” .357 but I couldn’t drop $900 on it. Every review says it’s really well built especially for a company new to the revolver game. How do you like yours?

I’ll take your advice and go with some .38 special if I can.

I really like my Kimber K6S as my primary concealed carry firearm... I got the 3 inch version because I wanted to use .357 Magnum ammo. I paid $723 for it. It's nice having 6 shots but it's pretty expensive to get one more round than most small .357 Magnum revolvers, which are generally 5 shot... I'm still not sure if it was worth the extra money to get that 6th round. Whenever I feel like carrying something lighter, I will occasionally instead carry my Ruger LCR .38 Special... but usually I carry my Kimber K6S or my Springfield XD-S Mod.2 .45 (which I bought almost 3 months ago).

Actually I advise using .38 Special only for home defense because the loud blast & blinding flash of .357 Magnum ammo is not suitable for confined spaces inside a home. But... for concealed carry I recommend using .357 Magnum ammo because if you ever need to use your carry revolver, it will be outdoors (parking lot mugging attempt, etc.) or in a spacious store... so the loud blast and blinding flash of .357 Magnum ammo will be mitigated by the outdoor/spacious surroundings.

$723 out the door isn’t too bad. I probably would’ve pulled the trigger on that price too.

You can still take your new Ruger SP101 to a gunsmith to have the hammer spur bobbed-off... generally it is a $35 to $40 job.

Also, your SP101 would fit nicely in a Fusion Holster. I have 2 Fusion Holsters (one for my Kimber K6S 3 inch, and one for my Springfield XD-S Mod.2 .45) and I really like them. The Fusion holsters feature the Ulticlip 3+, which is really nice whenever you decide to wear belt-less pants such as sweatpants or shorts. Most holsters require a belt, but the Ulticlip 3+ can be used with or without a belt. Of course you would still need to snugly tie your drawstring on sweatpants or shorts when using a Fusion holster.

I bought my Kimber K6S 3 inch (model # 3400011) online last year at Georgia Gun Store. They offer free shipping on orders over $600 (normally they charge $25 shipping). They still have one in stock for a little higher than what I paid last year ($9 higher now).

Too late now but I still think it’s a good deal.
