Former Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer: Not trusting organization adds pressure, stress

For a long time, I hated the dude..... Thought he was hypocritical for signing a huge deal (the contract after his rookie deal) with an organization that he had already known was flawed. I still can't understand why he did that if he feels this way..... But maybe he DID think that things were changing. Anyway, I think I understand his perspective now and I think he is absolutely, 100% correct. Everything he says here is spot on. The Bengals organization does not care about winning.

His brother is connected to 95 percent of the major QB prospects through the Elite 11 and is the personal guru/coach of half of the 1st and 2nd rd QBs each year.

"From the jump ... everybody, every single person - NFL people, agents, ex-quarterbacks I had talked to that were since retired and moved on - said, 'You can't go to Cincinnati. You can't go to Cincinnati. It's a quarterback graveyard.' ... I, at the time, was arrogant, young dumb, 20-year-old kid, and I was like, 'I'm gonna go there and make a difference. I'm gonna go there and change it. I don't care what all these people are saying.' ... I was naive."

That quote might turn out to be a problem if he gets in a big time QB prospects ear when the Bengals are picking early in thr draft.

I guess it would be sorta funny if it was Jordan that was talking the kids out of coming here.... We kept him employed because of his last name.

Not just employed but 3 years on an active roster guarantees a lifetime pension.

With that said CP holds a grudge about something and young QBs his brother works will get the full story all details included.

Deshaun Watson, Sam Darnold and Josh Allen were all mentored by J Palmer prior to the draft so there's a legitimate chance Tua or Hubert or both could be his clients this year.

They don't really have much choice about coming here if the Bengals draft them.

Sure, they can gamble and go back to school and risk injury. But if the Bengals pick one of these guys, they'll either play here and cash the checks, or sit out indefinitely because Mike Brown won't trade them.

Who cares what he thinks. We all know what he said is the truth. It doesn't change anything.
What's also true is that the team had more "success" after he was gone. 5 straight playoff years.

True. And it should also be noted that for all the gushing Palmer did about playing in the desert, he didn't have that much success there either. I mean, they won one playoff game total I believe....And that was a pretty stacked roster.

But, to Palmer's point, I think the 5 years of playoff runs were more the result of a few good (lucky?) drafts, combined with some talented coaching. Having Zimmer at his peak DC years and then having Jay and Hue running the offense created some stability. One thing that I will say about those Marvin teams was that they beat all the crappy teams they were supposed to beat (except Houston for some reason). But, they still never won a postseason game..... which I think validates what Palmer was saying.

I do wonder if Palmer is a little butthurt that the team was better after he left. I mean, when he left I think he figured he left the franchise for dead.

Let's be honest, Palmer played on 3 of the worst run franchises in the NFL, so his perspective is a little skewed.

I think the biggest difference between the Palmer and Dalton early years are that there was less drama in the Dalton teams, less player headaches.

Building through the draft works, if you are good at drafting, which they have shown recently not to be.

You guys all love you some Zimmer, but I think he was pretty overrated. His defense never showed up in big games. I can only think of 2 "big" games won by the defense, and they were both weather related, the game against the Pats and the night game against Denver.

And Gary Kubiak owes 100% of his coaching success to Marvin Lewis and Payton Manning.

If a player refuses to sign they just go in the draft the next year and the team that originally picked them loses out on the pick. This happened with Bo Jackson in the mid 80s. Its also a major reason why QBs were coming into the league as the highest paid players until they slotted rookie salaries in the last CBA. The players use to have all the leverage.

Now this isn't likely to be an issue but with how connected the Palmer's are to blue chip college QBs it's not impossible.

.

I think the offense failed us in the big games. Zimmer's defenses were largely responsible for our success within our own division. The wins we had vs. good offenses in Pittsburgh (2009, 2012, 2015) were mostly due to defense and special teams play. The other good team during his era was the Ravens and Flacco struggled against Zimmer's D.

2015 was actually Guenther..... But the guts of that D were Zimmer guys.

Now I have something to root for.

Bengals pick a QB at 1.
QB refuses to play, sits out the year to go back in 2021 draft.
Bengals stink again next year (with no qb), get the 1st pick.
Bengals take same player #1 in 2021.

and on and on

I still hope we take Chase Young #1. Then we can worry about the QB with our #2 pick, Burrows. If Burrows and Finley do not pan out, great, we take Trevor Lawrence the following year.

Are you suggesting that Joe Burrow, a likely top 5 pick in the NFL draft is dropping to us in the second round?

Hmm...Didn't think he was rising up the charts that quick. My bad on that. Okay, forget Burrows. Still take Young.

If one of the higher level QB's slide to 33, then I guess we can look at them and see if they fit the system. If not, I want to see us begin to build our franchise from the trenches out. OL/DL. Burrow has only had one good college season, kinda reminds me of Akili Smith a little too much. Chase Young needs to be our pick.

There are no LB prospects like last year, and the OL, we just invested in Williams, Hopkins is looking good at C, but the rest may need to go. Two guards and RT. Good pass catching TE who can block decent would be nice too.

May have to go FA for LB's.

Mike Brown will still be the owner next year. So just stop it.

how to play for the bengals.

play the game, like you normally would, but when you get a small injury, act like it's serious until they wheel you off the field in a cart. sit on the side lines and collect your check.

I don't think AJ is milking it.... He's played a lot of football. His body is breaking down. He's had multiple surgeries the last two seasons. I don't think there is any reason to assume he'll return to his prior standard of play. Every player has his expiration date.

That said, I'm sure we'll give him 20 million this offseason so that he'll talk nice about the franchise.
