Here's an interesting question? How many good starting pitchers have come through the Phillies "system" in the last 50 years? I'm skipping Nola because he was already a polished product in college who they fast tracked to the majors. So the only one I can think of is Cole Hamels. Schilling, Lee, Halladay, Carlton all came from other organizations. Brett Myers? Dick Ruthven? Larry Christenson? Pat Combs (lol) I can't even remember any good pitchers we traded away.

Robin Roberts, Curt Simmons, Chris Short. Oh, sorry, wrong era. :pound:

Yeah I posed the question on the mlb board and it looks like it is possible that the Brewers and Twins have been more inept at developing major league pitchers, so there's that......

Maddon too soft. We need a boss type!

I agree with a boss type but since the 2015 season, Maddon's teams won at least 90 games four times, and notched at least four postseason victories in three of them including the 2016 World Series championship team.

The bulk of problems with the Phillies organization may be the extreme use of analytics. They have fired everyone who used common sense and baseball skills throughout the entire system. Analytics can be helpful, but too much can cause robotic approach. Charlie enters as hitting coach and we improved at the plate. Proof in the pudding!

Doesn't really matter who the manager is, this team needs starting pitching.
Word! I could see the hitting bouncing back and being good next year but man, those last couple months they were rolling with Jason Vargas and Drew Smyly in their rotation! And it looks like they swung and missed on Arrieta (unlike left handed batters who had an OPS of over .900 against him). I guess they were a year early on Charlie Morton too. He's starting in the playoffs tonight. They really need like 5 or 6 starting pitchers before next year and I have no idea where they will come from. Nola is the only sure thing and maybe they do that Tampa thing where they have an "opener" for a couple innings then bring in Vinnie V. I guess Eflin and Arrieta will be back but I have no confidence in them

I would consider an 'opener' strategy.

The historical numbers for once through the lineup are significantly better than the 3rd time through the lineup.
Why the Oakland A’s Are Bullpenning a Wild Card Game

Let Arrieta and some mid-tier starters go once through the lineup, pitching 2-3 innings at a time. See if they can go on 2-3 days rest throwing 30-40 pitches each time like a reliever. You would have Nola pitching every 5 games to give them an extra day of rest.

You would need Nola, 8 SP, then 4 RP for a total of 13 total pitchers.
Of those 8, 2-3 could be pitching on two days rest for the 5th game before Nola pitches again.
Also factor in off days for more rest.

This team has a mental cancer that affects nearly everyone in the FO including that braindead owner. He tried to produce MoneyBall 2.0 and it failed. Geez, does this owner know ANYTHING about baseball and does he care beyond the Benjamins?

While I understand that people are frustrated with Hoskins, I find it baffling that a lot of people who seem to want him run out of town yesterday are still hoping for Darin Ruf's proud return.

That Tommy Joseph was a nice young man. Why can't we get him back? He's probably doing something All-American like working in a bar or as a plumber's apprentice, sending care packages to the troops. Maybe he joined the pipe-fitters union. Wherever he is, I'm sure they could lure him back.

I get the feeling that they’ll keep Kapler because Middleton and Klentak will rationalize, “well, he did OK, but we’ll do more dumpster dives to get him better pitching, and we’ll be fine”.
Kapler can make a great team mediocre!

The Kapler saga goes on! But why? WHY? WHY? WHY?
