I didn't see any point in dwelling on that oh so ugly game last week so the sooner we can turn our attention to week 2 to the better off we are...from a mental health perspective. :D

Up next...the Seattle Seahawks..1-0 after narrowly getting by CIN at home in week one.

The Bengals really outplayed the 'Hawks coming up with 22 first downs in the game compared to only 12 for SEA. Russell Wilson was sacked a ton in 2018 and if the 1st game is any indication, he will be getting sack a lot this year as he went down 3 times vs the Bengals front and add in another one from a blitzing CB for a total of 4 sacks.

Who is hurting?

Pouncey, Watt, Haden were all nicked up in the NE game. Coupled with Nix and Sean Davis, this is who we're watching this week. Pouncey and TJ appear to be relatively minor. Haden has a shoulder, he did go back into the game after the injury but only for a few plays. Davis is reportedly ready to practice this week so we'll see tomorrow as I think they're off today.

Amazingly Vegas has PIT as the early favorite at -4 as of today. They face a totally different style of OFC this week. 'Hawks will bring the DEF as they always will under Pete Carroll...AVill will need to have a solid game, but going up against a taller DE in Clowney might not be a bad thing.

Tomlin teams tend to bounce back after very poor efforts...well, it can't get much poorer than what we saw last week. I look for them to play better on both sides of the ball.

Outcome

While I expect SEA to play a little better on OFC this week also, but PIT's def is at least on the level with CIN and I'm thinking Ben steps up his game. I think PIT will get a W and cool off the smoking hot locker room...21-17 Steelers.

What say you?

Two things stand out to me from the Bengals/Seahawks game.

1) Dalton had a career high in passing. And his two tackles were Andre Smith (starting at LT for the first time ever in Cincinnati) and Bobby Hart (one of the worst tackles in the league if you buy the stats). Oh, and he didn't have AJ Green. If they don't improve on D, Ben should have an opportunity for a big day.

2) The Bengals had 4 sacks. The Bengal defense is basically the same personnel as last year. Either you are buying a Bengal defensive resurgence or you're questioning the Seattle line. I also saw where the leader in targets on the day was the running back. Not a good look when your qb is making the money that Wilson is making.

I'd say there are reasons for optimism for a Steelers bounce back game.

Last time the Steelers played the Seahawks was 2015 when Ben threw for 456yds... The result? They lost. Thanks to 2 backbreaking INTs from Ben, and a great 4th quarter from RW. I remember that game more for Markus Wheaton grabbing over 200yds while the Hawks doubled AB & Marty B all day long. Feels like ages ago though and these are 2 very different teams now.

Honestly I really don't feel like diving into this one, because its going to be as simple as this... Steelers coaches have to do better, or it's going to be another ugly one. Judging by how piss poor they coached in week 1 with a lot of the same glaring problems as years past, I'm guessing it might take another game or 2 before they get the juices flowing.

I have a hard time not viewing week 1 as a microcosm of whats to come... 5 months of prep & promise of changes coming, only to find the same lame-duck team they left on the field in 2018. And how does Tomlin answer for it?

"We were not ready for primetime"

And to add insult to injury we got the same "lack of communication" responses from the defensive personnel. These issues have plagued this team for what feels like a decade. But how can he really say that they weren't ready for it? They're playing the defending champions on a banner night to overshadow your franchise's historic glory on national television... If you need more motivation for that type of game then you're in the wrong business. Give me a damn break.

I keep asking myself "what has changed with this team & coaching that I'm supposed to be excited about?" and all I come up with is crickets. The scheming is the same, now without the talent in the offense to bail them out. The offensive gameplan centered around quick releases & outside runs. The quick passing game found no daylight, and the outside runs were against one of the fastest defenses in the league. Just terrible planning. The Defense is still guarding #1 WRs with LBers, and they are completely unable to guard the short crossing rub-routes. Mix in the inability to have the right personnel on the field when they mixed it up with timely runs up the middle for 5-6yds a touch, and deep balls that split and/or floated over the safeties that were out of position. The Pats were always 1 step ahead, every step of the way. Teryl Austin must've only been brought in for challenges alone, because his addition to the coaching staff sure as hell hasn't changed anything on the defensive side of the ball.

I think the offense can rectify itself, but the defense is on a 1-way ticket aboard the short-bus.

This game is going to be very interesting. Two middle of the road teams looking to return to glory. Steelers should be motivated after last week. Seahawks have to travel across country to play an angry team. Really not sure where to go with this one. However, if the Seahawks offense starts clicking Mike Tomlin might have to trip somebody. He should have done that Sunday night. I mean he threw in the towel when he elected to go for the FG at the 1 yard line down 20-0. That was an awful complete team effort. Hoping for a good team effort this Sunday. Our fans deserve a much better outcome.

I feel ya Face, but in hindsight of an ass whipping like that, there are no good comments...I mean a 30 pt margin? He stated the obvious imo. If they played a 24-35 loss, okay, you played a decent game and you got beat, but that? They were not ready for anytime imo.

I'm far more concerned with the repeated "lack of communication" breakdowns...that's a bigger indictment on Tomlin, how could they continue to have the same BS happening week after week? It's simple, lack of detail in practice....when Nelson blitzed in practice, they were in man so SOMEBODY had to be in charge of covering his man...yet in the game that guy fucked up and blew his assignment, and they use "lack of communication" as the crutch...but I said I was no longer going to get bent out of shape over his crap, so I will leave at that on Tomlin.

But with 15 games left, they still have the season ahead of them so by almost force of habit now, I engage...addicted on some level...lol

Lack of detail & lack of prep. Makes me wonder why they even do film prep/study at all. Watching the film on your opponent should provide most the answers to communication in situational football. The rest falls on the player to be mentally aware in the moment. If someone is struggling that bad to be aware, then the green-dot or DB-quarterback should be helping out. Nelson should have made sure when he broke the huddle that whomever was supposed to pass-off the WR to should have been ready. Basically someone didn't understand the playbook if they didn't know where they were supposed to be on that play.

Yep...exactly and that's the indictment on Tomlin...why not? Nelson probably should've initiated it as a reinforcement or reminder and maybe he did who knows...but it still goes back to a player blowing the assignment on the play....play XYZ...man DEF, right CB blitzes off the edge...who covers his man?

What scares me the most is that these sort of mishaps don't instigate any permanent changes. The coaches still play the same players & schemes hoping for better results. "We didn't execute". At what point do they finally understand that it has little to do with execution and more to do with piss-poor scheme? For example, guarding WRs with your LBers. When has that not been exposed?

LOL...watching that play several times I did wonder if Chick was supposed to be in coverage there? If so, you're banking on the DB getting to the QB before the WR can expose the LB.

Not saying that was the case there, but given that we've seen this staff put a OLB on a WR before in the RECENT past...it's possible...lol.

Week 2 Injury Report (Seahawks)

Tomlin gave Ben the 'Vets Day Off'.

Which I thought wasn't supposed to be happening anymore. Ben certainly could use the reps, and his WR's could use the time WITH him.

They know an 0-2 hole is tough to overcome in this league....you would hate to be pointing at situations like this only 2 weeks into the season...I can see week 8 or 9 giving vets off, but after that ass whipping they took...no one should be off except the injured guys.

Wow... Repor from practice this week had a very riled up Ramon Foster. Guess the guys were looking lethargic even in practice.

Part Two of the Bettis formula was then accomplished during a nasty, hot practice that turned salty when veterans - Ramon Foster in particular - demanded better and more detailed work from everyone.

"Of course he was shouting. We needed that," David DeCastro said of his linemate. "He's a leader. Obviously everyone's sore and feeling sorry for themselves. At the same time you've got to fight through that - at least be on the details. That was what he was trying to say."

"You've got to recognize what's in front of you, that's all," said Foster. "You've got to shake everything that's happened, and Wednesday's usually the day for that. And it's fitting that it's super hot and we're in full pads today, so everything piles on, but in a good way. Thursday will be a whole lot better."

DeCastro called the practice "sloppy, salty, a little bit of both."

Said Foster: "You want everything to be perfect the next time around. That's what you practice for. You practice to clean up mistakes. You practice to be better. I just got frustrated. I'm not about wasting time. I'm all about maximizing everything. I want to get this stink off worse than anybody, and as quickly as possible."

Sloppy practice after an embarrassing loss is not a good sign.

That shit wouldn't happen under Munch.

I said it at the time, and here we are. Most impactful loss on the team this offseason.

Ben throws for 400+ and the game comes down to the final minute. Could go either way. Good luck fellas, I'll be checking in from the mountain tops of Idaho.

Yep...hell, what they are practicing can be brought into question as well.

Just last year we were talking about a play vs KC that had TJ Watt covering a WR down field...back to back plays this happened....both times Watt was beaten, an overthrow on the 1st one and Mahomes targeted someone else on the next play.

Well...fastforward to last Sunday night...NE goes empty just like KC did and sure enough PIT has a LB covering Josh Gordon...this time VWill...he carries VWill trailing down the seam and Brady hits him...Edmunds gets there with a nice hit, but too late...30+ yd completion.

Now...they could defend that play the same way 10 times in a row, and no matter how well VWill executes, he's going to get beat by the faster player.

Good luck over there in Council! Bugle hard! Had some friends get back from Yellowpine area with elk tags filled.

Chomping at the bit over here for November to get here so I can fill my draw tag.
