Why would the Patriots know about this beforehand? Unless the accuser has been trying to get money from him before filing this lawsuit & he reported this to the team before signing with them. But I doubt that happened because the Patriots wouldn't have likely signed him with that guaranteed money if that was the case.

Pats said they didn't know about it, hence their surprise. They're likely mulling whether to cut him at this point but will probably prefer the NFL step in on its own and make the decision for them (i.e. league suspension, exempt list, etc.)
