I'm not a movie auteur, but for pure entertainment value :

Steven Spielberg
Jaws, Close Encounters, 1941, Raiders
He might have been a lock if not for 1941.
Also had Jurassic Park, Schindler's List, JP : Lost World

John Carpenter
The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing

James Cameron
Terminator, Aliens, Abyss
T2, True Lies, Titanic (this is tough to beat)

Stephen Soderbergh
Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Ocean's Eleven

Adam McKay
Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers

Peter Jackson
Lord of the Rings Trilogy I-III

Abyss and True Lies were pretty mediocre.
The other movies are great of course.

Agree with the Coen Bros add. The rest all include at least 1 that wasn't in the class of the others... imo.

I've been watching mostly older movies lately. Looking over the directors, Billy Wilder has a "hat trick" worth mentioning:

The Major and the Minor 1942
Five Graves to Cairo 1943
Double Indemnity 1944

Sunset Blvd 1950
Ace in the Hole 1951
Stalag 17 1953

Witness for the Prosecution 1957
Some Like it Hot 1959
The Apartment 1960

One interesting twist - generally speaking the three movies in each group are completely different styles.
