Well, it was what we all expected. Bad play by LB's. Too many guys sitting out. Anarumo inherited a defense that can't tackle.

Drew Sample didn't seem overly impressive when given the chance to catch balls. He did well blocking.

1st string offense did good even with no Green, Eifert, Mixon, Bernard or Ross. Driskel is not that good. Finley was pretty pretty good, but that was against 3rd stringers.

*sigh* We will see how it goes. 1st preseason game. New coaching staff, lot of musical positions. Hope Thursday night is better.

I really hope this means that he gets extra work on the Jugs machine this week.... Only because it would give Hobs an excuse to write the headline, "Drew Samples the Jugs." That would be comedy gold.

I didn't see the game, but I think the results sort of verify where this team is.

- The offense will be okay at times. Even with guys out, there are some good playmakers on this team and Dalton is a veteran qb. The coaching staff has some offensive talent. Ultimately the line will keep them from being a top 10 type unit, but they'll be okay.

- The defense is awful until further notice. The d-backs are overrated, the talent on the line is getting old and the new guys probably won't be ready to make the leap that is necessary. The linebackers are comically bad. The coordinator was a lifetime position coach for a reason. This is a bottom 5 unit and there is no reason to expect otherwise.

At least Marvin is gone... You probably won't have to watch as many comical clock errors or mismanagement at the end of halves and games. But this feels like a 5 win team. 8 if they gel quicker.

I can't analyze the DB's, because Jackson, Kirkpatrick and Dennard did not play. Only starting DB's that played with Williams and Bates, the safeties.

Geno wasn't on the line, and if Hubbard played, I never saw his number called. I think the LB's are by far the worst in the league still. Out of position, can't tackle, can't keep up with RB's and TE's.

I think DB's if everyone is healthy will be fine. DL looked pretty good even with backups playing. Problem is, going to kill us by a 1000 paper cuts. 3 to 4 yard slants, and out patterns. Our LB's are really bad from what I can see so far. Unless they improve drastically over the next 3 weeks, it doesn't look good. The shitty play of the LB's will neutralize the DL also, and DB's are going to have to play bump and run coverage just to keep the QB from taking a quick drop back and throw at the second level.

This is highly unlikely. Dre is probably the healthiest of our 3 corners and he's only played the entire season twice. Jackson and Dennard are made of glass.

I think this team in general is much much better than that. The real question to me is, how badly does our LB core and injuries drag us down again?

I agree that preseason is basically worthless when it comes to wins and losses. But I do think it reflects depth and quality of the roster construction.

I'm basing very little on what I said on the results from the game.... But I do think the game said a little about our depth - There second and third units were a little more NFL ready. I think Tobin gets too much credit from our fans for roster construction.

KC was so depressed by their defense against the Patriots in last years AFCCG that they fired the DC and hired Steve Spagnulo and then signed the Patriots' DL coach. Dalton shredded them on the first drive and he did it with two holding penalties that gave him 1st and 20. The Bengals were missing a few first string guys against the KC starting defense. If your starting offense had stayed in the whole game against the KC starting defense the final might have been 63-63.

Bengals need to keep a very close eye on cuts from the Patriots this year. You could probably find a complete starting defense that is better than the guys who decided not to play NFL football last week.

Well, our biggest issue is LB's and their inability to tackle or cover. So if you got some really good ones of those that we can convert to non-tackling, non-covering LB's, probably not interested in your rejects.
