I figured that they would at least give him the opportunity to retire first, but it makes sense from a financial standpoint.

Very sad that the rumors were true.
I am guessing they did it this way to protect some of his SB money. If he had retired, he would probably risk losing some of it.

B Wags is absolutely a mandatory extension. Kam and Doug were amazing Seahawks, sad to see them both go - least they got paid well.

I posted the following in another thread, but wanted to expand on it here:

This is the cap effect of the release of Kam Chancellor and Doug Baldwin:

2019:
Kam Chancellor
: $10.2m in dead money, $2.3m in cap savings.
Doug Baldwin: $6.2m in dead money, $6.8m in cap savings.

Total: $9.1m in cap savings.* (Realistically, it's actually $7.9m. Until Baldwin passes a physical - which is unlikely - he will carry an additional $1.2m cap charge for 2019 to cover injury protection under the CBA)

2020:
Kam Chancellor
: $0 in dead money, $13.4m in cap savings.
Doug Baldwin: $0 in dead money, $14.5m in cap savings.

Total: $27.8m in cap savings.

As with 2019 if Baldwin is still unable to pass a physical, there will be a $575,000 cap hit for the same reasons. So the number will more likely be $27.3m.

This puts the Seahawks in a favorable cap situation for 2020.

Prior to the signings of Ziggy Ansah and Jamar Taylor, the Seahawks have $33m for 2019 and $82m for 2020. I've seen conflicting numbers on the Ansah contract, but let's assume that those two combine for $10m in 2019. That puts us at $23m for 2019.

The cap space for 2020 looks very promising with $82m+ to spend. I'm unsure how the cap rollover works, but they could have even more than $82m to use on 2020 free agents. If the Seahawks are willing to meet Bobby Wagner and Jarran Reed's contract demands, it shouldn't be much of a cap constraint to accommodate those two and still have a substantial amount left over to re-sign other contributors or even make a serious free agent acquisition.

Agreed, we should be in a great position in 2020. It really sucks to lose Baldwin, but we have a good run game with lots of RB options... I'd REALLY like to see Penny get more involved in the pass game out of the backfield - he was pretty damn good in College.

Regardless, next year might be a run year. We'll have 2 2nd round picks and a SHIT load of compensatory. I believe we get a 3rd/4th/6th and 7th. I'd like to see Seattle potentially trade UP in the 1st round and nail a heavy hitter. And we should be able to go pretty aggressive in free agency even with a Wagner extension and Wilson's massive contract.

Is Suh still available? Not gonna lie, I'd like to nab him on a 1-2 year deal and he may want revenge against the Rams, lol.

I think the biggest issue with Rashaad Penny getting involved in the passing game is that he's a poor pass blocker so he doesn't really fit the mold of what you'd prefer from a third down back. I think the plan is to mostly use Chris Carson between the tackles, Penny getting run plays outside the tackles and perhaps having someone else in the 3rd down role. Penny has the athleticism to make an impact in the pass game, but he's a liability in pass protection.

You're correct on the comp picks. As much fun as it would be to trade up, I don't mind trading down and taking as many shots on young players as possible. That philosophy has worked for the Seahawks and it has the added benefit of giving the team a bunch of cheap players who can provide depth/rotational roles on a rookie contract which frees up money for vets.

I'm not sure how aggressive I'd like to see the Seahawks in free agency. I like the model the Seahawks and Patriots have used by developing your own players and paying them if they're worthy. You pay a really high premium for free agents and I'd prefer the money be used wisely on acquisitions similar to what we did with Michael Bennett and Cliff Avril.

Ndamukong Suh is still available, but with the signing of Al Woods, it seems pretty unlikely that they go after Suh. Additionally he is 32 years old so I wouldn't give him a 2 year deal personally.

Not sure, (I may be late with this one) if anyone seen this, the Seahawks just signed AL Woods (DT) to a very cheap one-year deal worth a reported $2.25 million. He add depth to the D-line.

Yeah he's a good depth addition. Wasn't great as a starter with the Colts but could play an important rotational role. I expect that he will likely rotate with Poona Ford.

Ford needs to get on the field more this year. Still unsure why he didn't play more last season. He is almost unblockable 1 on 1 and you saw it every time he was on the field.

Poona Ford ranked among best defensive tackles in the league

In his small sample size he was a eye opener. Needs to play more and was stupid he was on the bench so much. Maybe he just has a hard time learning the defense.

Couldn't agree more.

I was a huge fan of bringing him in as a UDFA. My friend is a die hard UT and Seahawk fan and got me really hyped on Ford when we signed him. I think the reason he didn't see more playing time is due to the fact that he slowly worked his way up the depth chart.

When I looked at his career at Ford and saw him play I was convinced that if he was 3 inches taller he would've been a day-2 pick.

We officially signed Geno which takes our roster to its max of 90 players. This now means we would need to release a player to sign anyone else in free agency.

It may sound strange at first, but I think the NYJ firing Maccagnan improves our chances to get a decent deal with Bobby Wagner. Maccagnan is the guy who signed CJ Mosley to that ridiculous $85M/5yr deal, and it could be argued that it was a factor in him losing his job. JS wouldn't have to try all that hard to use this to help make a strong case that repeating things that fired GMs do is not a reasonable expectation.

I hope you're right. For the sake of playing devil's advocate here are my thoughts:

C.J. Mosley should have never received that deal and it really fucked us over. Bobby Wagner is representing himself and by all measures he has indisputably been the best off the ball linebacker in the NFL for the last 3 years. I don't believe he would be willing to accept a contract that doesn't make him the highest paid inside linebacker in the NFL, which is fair. Bobby himself acknowledged that this could be his last year in Seattle.

I have a really bad feeling that the Seahawks drafted Cody Barton and Ben Burr-Kirven as a contingency plan in case a contract is not agreed upon with Wagner.

Is the best inside linebacker in the NFL worth $17m a year? I don't know. I don't believe that Wagner would be willing to take a contract that doesn't match or exceed the contract C.J. Mosley signed. From his perspective, he doesn't give a shit if Mosley's contract was ridiculous. If Mosley can get that kind of money, someone will give it to him.

I'm really conflicted on this issue because I don't know what the wise move is. Would it be prudent to give a linebacker who will be 30 years old in 2020 a five year contract $85m with $43m guaranteed? Once again, I don't know. I want to see him retire a Seahawk, but I don't see that the Jets GM getting fired (possibly) over the Mosley contract will give the Seahawks any leverage. If I'm Bobby Wagner, I'd say "That sounds like a you problem. If you don't give me that kind of money, someone else will."

The best thing the Seahawks have going for them is that they have the cap space to do it and the new CBA will likely expand the salary cap. Hopefully an agreement is reached, but I could understand if the Seahawks don't want to give him $17m a year. Hopefully I'm wrong and you can laugh at me if he signs a reasonable contract with the Hawks.

Spot on.The one small saving grace for the Hawks could be Bobby Wags could settle for a little less considering he won't have any agent's commission to deal with. But yes Seattle is in aa tough spot.

Perhaps, but it seems that players who are arguably the best at their position want to be paid as such. I think it's more about respect and recognition than the difference of a couple million dollars.

I hope I'm wrong, but I can't see Wagner getting a contract extension that doesn't at least meet Mosley's in some regard.

The Seahawks will probably punt on the issue and give him the franchise tag after the 2019 season. The Seahawks will have the cap flexibility to give Bobby a contract matching that of Mosley, it's just a matter of if they think it might be frivolous to give a middle linebacker $17m a year.

Somewhat random and I don't know how many of you watch this show, but it looks like Marshawn Lynch is getting into acting:

I didn't notice that it was him at first.

Should Seattle be looking to pursue Gerald McCoy, now that Tampa Bay cut him?
