Not sure why I didn't do this earlier.

The 2018-19 season is behind us (Thank God) and now we have what could arguably be the most important off-season in many, many years.

The Lakers need a President of Basketball Operations and a Coach.

Also, depending on ones point of view...a new GM.

All of this and they need to try to add another top level FA and tweak the rest of the roster a bit.

All things considered and as embarrassing as the season has been pretty much since Christmas, all or most of the issues will be fixed with the right FA signing. So, in short, despite how things look, our beloved Lakers aren't that far away from being a contender again.

Sometimes though, the last couple of steps of a miles long journey can be the most difficult to make.

So, we now have a thread to discuss reports, rumors, ideas, and whatever moves are actually made.

End of the day, while there is bound to be some disagreement on what they should/will do...we all want the same thing...

for the Lakers to start winning again. :suds:

Some thoughts:

President of Basketball Operations: Folks are saying that the Lakers are doing things backwards by looking to interview/hire a coach before they hire a President. This may be true. However, it's also been reported by Colin Cowherd that the Lakers have their guy and that they can't make it official because that person's team is still in the playoffs. Rumors are ranging from Clippers GM Michael Winger, to Raptors GM Masai Ujiri, to Sam Presti, to Bob Myers. Cowherd also said that the person they have targeted is the one who has okayed the list of coaching candidates.

If they really have the next guy targeted and making decisions, that would be more in line with how Dr. Buss used to run things by keeping it close to the vest and not saying anything until it's a done deal.

On the other hand, it's hard to imagine a team President working with his current playoff team while also calling shots for the team he's heading to. Although, I don't think it would actually be unprecedented either.

Whoever it is, I think it needs to be someone who is an experienced executive who doesn't have ties to the Lakers unless it's The Logo or Riley (and I'm not sure about Riley).

Coach: The top 3 candidates in order are apparently, Monty Williams, Ty Lue and Juwan Howard. Apparently, Williams and Lue have been asked back for a 2nd interview. It looks like Monty Williams is the Lakers preferred choice, but they will likely have to settle for Ty Lue. Rumor is that if the Sixers don't make it to at least the ECF, Brett Brown is out and Williams will replace him.

GM: It's hard to know what to do with Pelinka. According to rumors, no one likes the guy and many won't even answer if he calls. On the other hand, there don't appear to be any direct quotes from anyone around the league saying this. On the one hand, with Magic's gigantic shadow covering him, it's hard to point out anything that he did to show he deserves to be fired. But it's also hard to point to anything he has done to keep his job.

As for players:

Obviously, the Lakers are going to look to sign one of the top FA's whose name starts with a K (KD, Kawhi, Kyrie or Kemba).

If that doesn't pan out, then they will likely try to trade for AD.

If they don't get that done, then they may look to someone like Jimmy Butler.

I've mentioned before that I could also see them doing something like signing Nikola Vucevic and trading maybe Lonzo, Kuz or Hart and some draft picks (including this seasons lottery pick) to Washington for Bradley Beal (or someone else for a Beal level player). The better the pick, the better the offer they can make for a Beal type player or for AD.

Imo, it would be a mistake to go another year with 1 year placeholders to try to sign AD after next season. Although, I suppose that would be better than overpaying for a 2nd tier guy just to make the playoffs.

@shopson67 brought this guy up in the nba general forum but he's at least worth paying attention to. Over the last couple of weeks, he's tweeted out moves about who the Lakers might interview and when usually days before guys like Woj and Stein have. So it seems like he does indeed have sources. FWIW though, I did some digging and he did claim Paul George had signed a 4 year deal with the Lakers last summer so maybe don't take his word as 100% truth.

Don't really know how the twitter thing works, but when I clicked on it, it said that Kawhi to the Lakers is pretty much a done deal.

Sure hope he's right. But not holding my breath.

Not holding my breath either, but that would be the ideal outcome of this summer for the Lakers (along with getting Riley or the Logo as president).

Riley already said, he is not interested in the job.

I would prefer Jerry, and the rumor is that their candidate is still active in the playoffs.

Rumor mill seems to think that if the report is true, it's Presti.

Maybe he wants to get away from Westbrook too? lol

Well PG is stuck in OKC forever. Shame, he really could have helped here.

Presti or West would be the best option for President.

I know he's unlikely to sign with the Lakers but the big fish I want is KD.

We'd have the 2 best players in the League....we'd be dominant regardless who else came in.

That might be one of the best duos ever.

In order of preference:

1-KD
2-Leonard
3-Irving

Well PG is stuck in OKC forever. Shame, he really could have helped here.

I'll bet he'll be thinking the same thing, maybe as early as tonight.

Imo, PG's decision was emotional and, if he really wanted the Lakers to "try harder" to trade for him, shortsighted as well.
