Mike Reiss ESPN Staff Writer
The Patriots were busy on Thursday by signing some depth players in free agency, agreeing to deals with DT Mike Pennel (Jets), S Terrence Brooks (Jets), WR Maurice Harris (Redskins), WR Bruce Ellington (Lions) and TE Matt LaCosse (Broncos). The deals for Pennel, Brooks and LaCosse were all for two years, while Ellington's was a one-year pact. Pennel (6-4, 332) is a big-bodied run-stuffer who projects to help fill the void created by Malcom Brown's free-agent departure to New Orleans. Brooks is viewed as a strong special-teams player, while Harris and Ellington have experience in the slot and will vie for roles on a depleted receiver depth chart. The 6-foot-6, 255-pound LaCosse, whose deal has a maximum value of $4.8 million, has some upside at a spot where the club has moved on from Dwayne Allen in the No. 2 role. Add it all up, and Thursday was a day in which the Patriots focused on building depth at lower numbers on the salary cap.

Well with all these signings along with Bolden, Slater and Ebner NE should win the ST battle.

I know BB puts a lot of stock in STs but does he know something the rest of us don't? Has he found a wrinkle in the new rules he's going to exploit?

These signings may be JAG's but Leonard Guy and John Simon both were JAG's and contributed in 2018. Hopefully, some of the recent signings will respond likewise.

Patriots sign Matt Lacosse for the TE position. He is an ok player. Nothing special but will definitely get more opportunities with the Pats than he would have with the Broncos.
How does he rate vs Allen whom we just lost?

Not as big. Faster with 10X better hands. Not afraid to cut across the middle in traffic. Is a good blocker, not great because he was never asked to block, just catch the ball. Yet when he's needed for runblocking or chipping a defender he's been very good. He not quit Gronk, but is a perfect back up if Gronk goes down. Just try to remember how depleted the offense was when Allen had to take over for Gronk. The blocking was there but not the pass catching downfield. This guy can catch. If they absolutely need a run blocker, bring in a back up tackle like Waddle.

This is an excellent signing. Gronk has been sent a warning about making his decision whether or not he's playing.

Wait until the draft and watch BB move up and take Hockenson the TE from Iowa.

Well this is very encouraging news. I the Pats would darn sure need to move up to take Hockenson I think he is gone top 15 IMO. But in this TE heavy draft I am left wondering if sitting at 32 and getting best DT is a better option.

He is a terrible blocker. Let's just get the bad out of the way. There were so many running plays last year that got blown up because Lacosse couldn't do jack squat as a blocker. Bronco fans were cursing his name in many games because of it.

The good is that he is a nice receiving option as that #2 guy. He has some athleticism and ok hands. If Gronk is back then putting these two on the field together during passing downs makes a ton of sense. He is a guy though that you are always looking to upgrade because he is far from being a complete TE.

Adrian Clayborn is out.

@AJaClay

Thank you @Patriots for my time with the organization. I gained so much respect for how you do things and win championships. It’s done the right way through hard work. Thank you for granting my release. I’m ready for this next chapter.

Maybe it's just me but when I look at the remaining FA nothing really wow's me. Maybe Jordy but not the type WR I feel we need.

Release WTF you weren't a damn slave

He had another year on his contract. It opened $4M of cap space.

What the idiot didn't understand is that by being given his requested release, BB told the NFL that this shithead ain't worth $4M. Sometimes, getting what you ask for is the worst thing that you can ask for.

He thinks he's going to get Tre Flowers money because he played on the same team??

MIKE PENNEL, DEFENSIVE TACKLE
Of these five additions, Pennel has the best chance of playing a significant role in 2019. At 6-foot-4, 332 pounds, he’s a space-eating, two-gapping D-tackle who should slide into the spot formerly occupied by Malcom Brown, who signed with the New Orleans Saints this week.

The former New York Jet won’t provide much pass rush (one sack in five NFL seasons), but he’s the type of solid run-stuffer the Patriots need in the interior of their defensive line. Pennel was Pro Football Focus’ second-highest-graded interior defender in the AFC East last season behind new teammate Lawrence Guy.
