Anyone who says downtown Cleveland is pure trash hasn't been there for a decade.
Same with Phila. It has a vibrant downtown with lots to do and some of the best restaurants in the country.
People that blast some of these cities have no clue. I have not been to Cleveland in at least 20 years but I never really thought of it as that bad. Shaker Heights is about as nice a suburb as anywhere. Philadelphia's Main Line is probably the nicest suburb in the country. It is beautiful, has great homes, great schools (even public schools), lots to do, and just a very nice place to live. They have even made movies about it.

The main thing I don't like about Philly is just the cost of living. My friend there is looking to buy a house in the Blue Bell area, which is a nice area, but good lord he's looking at spending at least $300-400k for anything even somewhat decent that wouldn't require a ton of work or isn't 1,000 sq ft. There are some fun areas but it's just so insanely expensive.

Cleveland 20+ years ago was still pretty good. It was hit really, really hard in the mid-2000s, and was shitty for about 10 years. Then they started rebuilding a lot of the areas that fell off. Michael Simon opened several new restaurants, and there are breweries everywhere. One of the best parts, though, was the area known as The Flats that fell off in the 2000s has completely been rebuilt and now has a ton of great places. Living in Columbus, which is usually fawned about on the "best cities" lists, I can say without question that I'd take downtown Cleveland easily.

We were driving through STL back in 74, and the car was acting up. Dad stopped to look it over and a cop stopped by. He said what ever we do, do not leave the car because it would be stripped before we returned.

Wasn’t that in a movie?

Is it still essentially a war zone? Haven't seen a news report on Detroit in a while...
It's one of those places where the cops don't really report much. They just do enough to survive.

The only reason Philly isn't 100% garbage is because of Tony Luke's.
I've always heard good things about Tony Luke's, always right up there when it comes to ranking the best cheesesteak in town. I'll have to try it if/when I'm ever back in Philly. I was always partial to Jim's on South Street. I have to confess that I gave the Geno's vs Pat's battle a try during my last visit. These are probably the two best known cheesesteak houses in town, at least with respect to tourists that is. Can't remember which one I liked more, but neither of them stacked up to Jim's as far as I'm concerned.

I haven't been there in about 12 years but had gone a few times on business.

I've spent a lot of time in both STL and Chicago and for all the flack Chicago gets for being unsafe (which is pretty deserved depending on where you are) I still thinks its better than STL, and that doesn't even include the dumpster fires that are the towns immediately across the river.

Says a Cards fan. A team that normally resides in the cellar, whether it was the NFC East, or the NFC West. Wentz has a lot more upside than Foles. I love Nick, but he does not have the talent that Carson Wentz has.

BTW, I have lived out west and been to Phoenix many times, you want to talk about ugly places. Everything out there looks the same and everything is brown. Phila has a 300 year old history of architecture and there are different colors in the landscape because we have grass, trees and flowers that grow naturally and are not imported from California.
That sounds like a blast. So how often do you drive around looking a buildings?

I would rather spend my time on one of over 300 golf courses across the state. Trust me, there's plenty of grass, trees and flowers to look at while teeing it up on a 65 degree day in mid February.

Just me, but when I'm in a city, I tend to observe architecture.

That's fine. mannyz was making sound like a huge draw. You look at architecture when you're "in a city". You don't go to a city specifically to check out architecture. Or if you do, that might happen once.

Outdoor recreation, weather, cost of living, etc. those are huge draws. Philly doesn't touch Phoenix in those areas.

It can be part of the draw. I love walking cities, and admiring cool architecture.
