Shit! Bad news. Frank was a solid guy, could be a real hardass but was a real force in baseball as a player and after.

Sad news. A classy, ground breaking gentleman and an all time great.

I get angry that he will be known as the "first black manager". For that all you have to do is get hired, but to win a MVP in both leagues is badass!!! RIP Frank Robinson ... ALL CLASS!!!

Frank is the most under-rated player in history.
He rightfully deserves mention with Mays, Aaron, and other all time greats.
For some reason he was always overlooked...and it is sad that only in passing we get to really look at his legacy.
I am so happy to have briefly met him in Baltimore.

His individual trophy hardware is insane
Rookie of the Year
NL MVP
AL MVP
World Series MVP
Gold Glove
Manager of the Year

I am not sure anyone in baseball has all six of the elite individual awards possible.

As a child my dad gave me as a gift one of his old baseball cards of Robinson which was always special to me. RIP.

I've got an autographed Robinson baseball my dad gave me as a kid. He knew I'd rather have stuff like that than some silly toy.

Yup. His playing days were before my time, and I never really appreciated what a BEAST of a player he was until the best player study we did here a year or so back. Dude is probably a top 25 player.

I was lucky enough to be growing up in Baltimore when Frank Robinson came to town and saw him play.

Great hitter, tough, smart player, the whole package.

It's no surprise the Orioles became a powerhouse as soon as he arrived.

Very sad news. I had the fortune of meeting him briefly in 2010 when the owners had a meeting at Target Field and he was working for the commissioner's office.

He was a true gentleman and he will be missed. It's a sad day for baseball today.

I wouldn't go that far...what separates guys like Aaron and Mays from Robinson is that they had better primes/peaks.....

Looking at WAR for instance:
-Mays had 6 seasons of 10+ WAR and 3 more seasons of 9+ WAR
-Aaron had 2 seasons of 9+ WAR, and 6 more seasons of 8+ WAR
-Robinson by comparson topped out at 8.7 WAR and only had 1 season with a WAR of at least 8.

And then by career WAR:
-Mays - 156 WAR
-Aaron - 143 WAR
-Robinson - 107 WAR

Nobody mentioned the Triple Crown yet!
I think it hurt Frank a lot that his average dipped below .300 at the end of his career. He also came up 57 hits shy of 3000, but he was shot when he stopped playing at 40 and it reflects well on him that he didn't keep playing himself as his own manager.

Hurt him in what way? His overall legacy in baseball?

When he was asked who the best player he ever managed was, Robinson grinned, then pointed to himself.

Sorry I didn't complete that thought....yes, I meant as far as his legacy. Similar thing with Mantle, I think Mick and Frank were both viewed as more "sluggers" than "hitters" because they didn't average .300+ for their careers. Silly distinction, a guy who hits .294 with power and a good OBP is much more of a hitter than a guy at .305 or whatever who doesn't get XBHs and get on base in some other ways.
