Problem with smaller cities is that then it automatically is behind soccer. And they need bigger cities, for the facilities, fans that can support a minor league type franchise and most importantly a recruiting tool if the XFL is going to really try to allow players to play who aren’t yet eligible for the NFL or even having a practice squad debate playing there instead.

The problem though, is that being in bigger cities puts them in direct competition with the NFL. That's a fight that they just can't win.

As for supporting a minor league type franchise...in MLB, most minor league franchises are in smaller cities, not in the same city as the big league team.

Putting a team in Los Angeles, for example, puts them in direct competition with the Rams and Chargers. Additionally, the season is set to run February 2020 which puts them in direct competition with the Lakers.

Imo, the XFL would have been smarter to put a team in Anaheim where the Rams used to play and where they only compete with the Angels and Ducks.

Or San Diego which just lost the Chargers and where they would only be competing with the Padres.

Taking a year off definitely did wonders for Maurice Clarrett and Mike Williams playing careers.

He shouldn't have to wait. But seeing as he does, a QB not playing competitive ball for 2 years doesn't seem like a good idea to me. He should definitely stop running head first into LBs though.

But to counter that, nearly no smaller city actually supports a minor league baseball team, the MLB franchise, sponsors and owners losing money is mostly what keeps the minor league system viable.

It won’t be in direct competition with the NFL, it will be the NBA, MLB and MLS. All except the NBA are regional sports now. Going against the Lakers isn’t ideal, but I think the XFL is more looking to go against the Clippers, just like they’d rather go after fringe fans who would go to Mets game not the Yankees.

I’m not completely disagreeing but I understand using football proven cities that all have advertisers compared to smaller markets that are nearly completely based off of attendance. As well as renting out a NFL stadium and collecting the gate is more more revenue than filling smaller markets. Trying to rent college football stadiums becomes problematic with spring ball, club sports, Olympic sports etc.

Completely agree with San Diego, St. Louis or Oakland though.

When I say competing, I mean as far as which team will be picked by fans to attend games. For example, I think most people probably can't afford season tickets for more than one team and the vast majority will choose the NFL team. Same with folks who maybe can only afford to go to a couple of games a year. In a smaller city with no NFL franchise, they would be the only game in town as far as football.

And to be clear, the types of smaller cities I'm talking about are ones like Oakland, San Diego, etc. Not exactly "small cities", just not as big as the city with the NFL team.

I think it would be good to go with cities that size. In the cases of 3 mentioned, they have the added benefit of having had NFL teams, but I think there'd be good opportunity with cities that size that haven't had NFL franchises.

Either way. It's football, so I know I'll be checking it out and hoping it succeeds.

I’m not completely disagreeing I just view it totally different. The XFL ticket prices won’t be nearly as much as the NFL, more along the lines of the MLS. The XFL now will have ten times the money it did when it tried it the first time, and being a wrestling fan from my youth one thing Vince isn’t afraid of is losing money to be successful as opposed to when he first did it when his company had just gone public and the XFL was part of the WWE stock.

I’m agreeing with you with those cities are ideal but the bigger the city the better the sponsorship they can get and easier and cheaper for travel and accommodations. Even “competing” against the Lakers there is money for sponsorship which helps with recruiting players which is the most important thing to make the league a success this time around.

I hope it succeeds because I like Vince McMahon and there is a reason 2020 is the time the season is going to happen and not to get political but his close billionaire friend will be out of a job and will help keep it a float this time around until it at least becomes a niche sport that will compete with college football in recruiting and the squeezed out middle class of the NFL.

Plus I hate Bill Polian so that’s another reason I want the XFL to succeed. Though the downside is Mike Leach will be a HC of one of the teams.
