How is it that Anthony Rendon has never been on an all star game roster?

Lets review some quick facts. There are 34 players on an all star game roster.
Antrhony Rendon has plaed, 5th, 6th, and 11th in three different MVP. That means that in one season he was voted better than 29 players who were on the all star roster, in another season he was voted better than 28 players who were on the all star roster, in another season he was voted better than 16 players who were on the all star roster.

So, the conclusion: despite placing 5th, 6th, and 11th in the most valuable player voting in three separate seasons, the people in charge of building the all star roster could not find a place for him among the 34 roster spots on the all star roster?

Simple: All Star voting is essentially a popularity contest and the NL has so pretty popular 3B. I realize Rendon has played a lot of 2B since Murphy left, but off-hand, I want to say his best seasons have come at the hot corner.

having him on my Dynasty league over the years -
I'll take a crack at it ....

a few of his solid above average years and very good seasons he missed some time due to injury, and usually that is in first half or it runs into July and all-star break, so there have been times he was unable to play in July.
Recall, he has been injury prone a lot, he is a bit of a delicate flower.
his years he missed the most time were '13 and '15, i think,....

and next, most importantly - figuring the NL has 2 or 3 top notch stud superstar 3B's every year making the ASG, like Aranado, Bryant a couple times, and then recently Justin Turner and also Carpenter as well,

for a popularity contest, Rendon flies under the radar.
He has been deserving, when healthy - but his injury prone background has not helped his cause either.

If he continues to have good seasons, and stays healthy, he will get more recognition.
He is age 28 now, his next 3 to 4 seasons can and should be huge, as he is right in his prime.
and, if Bryce leaves, look for AR to hit 3rd in the order more as well.
his production should only increase then,

He actually hasn't played 2nd base since 2015, prior to Murphy joining the Nats.

Rendon's been awesome and I didn't realize he's never been an All-Star myself, but 3rd base is a very deep position right now and he's had to compete with the likes of Nolan Arenado, Kris Bryant and Justin Turner.

Rendon is 7th among MLB position players in WAR over the last 3 years. Only 3rd baseman with more WAR over that span is Jose Ramirez. He's batted .292/.374/.504 with a 130 wRC+ (7th best, and that includes a pretty meh 2016 season offensively) but he leads 3rd base in UZR over that span. Chapman's the only 3rd baseman with a higher UZR/150 but he has about 1800 fewer innings (though I wouldn't argue he's the best defensive 3rd baseman right now).

doesn't help too that seems to be overshadowed by his own teammates (Scherzer, Harper (who Rendon has more 6+ WAR seasons than).

It is strange. He is a good 1. Given Harper probably won't be back with the Nats next yr. maybe Rendon gets an ASG appearance.

Also, the All-Stars are determined at the halfway point and I believe multiple times Rendon has really turned it on late in the season. Resulting in good MVP-voting results but at the halfway point was maybe not nearly as good as he finished. I still think he should have some all-star games to his credit but these at least help explain the lack of them.

Hell, the voting starts like 2 months into the season. A lot of guys, especially those who miss a lot of ST, don't really get going until June-July.

There's only been 3 years where Rendon was even close to be called a snub for all star voting, based on the numbers that are usually looked at when people vote (as a majority of voters aren't stataholics), 2014; 2017; 2018. In 2014, not only was Rendon an unknown, but the 4 3Bmen who were taken were all with similar in numbers. In 2017, though Rendon put up his strongest case for all star, Arenado was more established with greater quantity numbers, Lamb hit more HRs and Turner had an insane BA/OBP/SLG/OPS despite missed time. Finally, 2018, again decent numbers (though power was down), but Arenado, Gennett and Suarez all had stronger cases across the board.

Finally, since each team has to have an all star - the spaces are limited on a team like Washington where there are 3-4 guys already going each year. Rendon could get passed over at times for guys who have to be filled in for a team that otherwise wouldn't have an all star.

Yeah, I don't know about his entire career, but last year his average and OBP were about 50 points higher in the second half. Struck out about half as much.

There have been MVPs who were not ASs that season.
