Maybe they'll try for 2030, who knows? I think if a new arena for the Flames would have been part of the bid, it would have passed.

Why wasn't it?

Why wasn't it?

My opinion - The city cobbled together a bargain basement bid at the 11th hour and they wanted to keep the dollars as low as possible. I don't know why a new 5,000 seat arena was part of the bid, nobody wanted that, they wanted a replacement for the Saddledome. There was a lot of mistrust built up over this process and let's be honest, people are still struggling in Calgary, the economy is still bad and the last thing on people's minds are tax increases to pay for a 2 week party.

I get the reason for no from the people. I'd have voted no on Calgary as well with its economy. Not too mention it seems that city has zero skill in planning construction. But not including a full arena in there is a mistake but if they are throwing a low bid in just because, why even waste money on a vote as it would be rejected anyway from the iioc

Not sure why you guys think if a new Flames arena were included the referendum would've suceeded. Gary Bettman and the Flames literally campaigned against Nenshi during last year's mayoral election and Nenshi still wiped the floor with his opponent while telling the Flames, Brian Burke and the NHL to kiss his ass.

Almost nobody wants to use public funds to build arenas and stadiums anymore. The great scamming days are over.

Then the flames are fucked... I don't believe in the city paying full for the arena but by how much a team means to a Canadian city and what it does for it's economy is big. I think a 70/30 split is fair for an arena (70 to team)

There's been more than enough studies done over the past decade regarding the effect sports teams and new arenas actually have on a region's economy and almost all signs point to "not much".

To be perfectly honest though, I think there is an argument to be made that professional sports teams are a net-negative on local economies that hasn't really been made yet. The amount of money that people spend on tickets for sports and other events at these arenas, combined with parking and concessions, all go into the pocket of one or a group of massively wealthy owners. If even half of that money is spent by the same consumer elsewhere in the community, among small-to-medium sized businesses, I would imagine the positive impact on the local economy would far outweigh the benefit from a billionaire or two getting to pocket more local cash for them to service their yacht moored in St. Tropez.

I'm not saying that we should go out and ban pro sports or anything but the whole community benefit/social fabric argument for major league sports is one that really doesn't apply to any modern-day circumstances outside maybe Green Bay. I don't think there is a single honest study anybody could ever produce that would be able to show that Calgarian/Albertan tax dollars are better off being spent on a new large event centre instead of on social programs, public transit, education or other economic development strategies that rely on creating more than 23 full time jobs for part-time residents and a bunch of shitty-paying part time ones.

Flames should ask the ref's union to cough up the 10 grand for Peters fine, if they call the trip on Backlund and award an automatic goal to make it 3-0, the Dumba hit on Backlund followed by Lomberg going after Dumba doesn't happen.

Lost in all this is Mike Smith got a shutout. As in didn't give up any goals. He may have a low floor but he's got a high ceiling as well.

Giordano hearing is a joke, sure it was a trip, but there is no knee-on-knee. It's too bad Koivu got hurt, but just because a guy gets injured doesn't necessarily mean it's suspension or even fine worthy.

It's a make up call for him taking out Cam Fowler's knee at the end of the season a couple of years ago. I say he should only get a fine, no suspension as captain on captain incidents need to be held to a higher standard. If Wilson and Reaves got off with only penalties, than so should Gio.

Long live truculence.

Kunitz with a elbow a couple of games ago and no hearing also comes to mind.

/Ducks fans still boo Gio at Ponda Center everytime he touches the puck, they're starting to come around lol
