Needed a splash after missing playoffs 3 straight years.

So who gets Greinke now with the D Backs firesale?

With a 15 team no trade list....it’s hard to say.

It probably depends how much money they’ll eat.

Maybe the Giants won't finish last this year.

What signing? He was traded for as a one year rental, for basically Cardinal scraps. Great deal for the Cards as it cleared some prospect chaff to try and impress Goldy enuff to then sign...

Problem is that Carpenter goes to third and not sure his arm/shoulder is stable enuff. It already jeapordizes turning double plays with his lofting tosses

Not from a Cardinals standpoint. The players traded were highly expendable...cards needed to remove players from the 40 man and are rolling the dice with house money

I approve as a SF Giants fan. He has killed us over the years. He could be in the middle of a 3 for 50 slump and still kill the ball off of us

One of my favorite players in the MLB. Very good pickup for the Cards.

Good trade for both sides.
Arizona would have lost him after this year. Kelly and Weaver are both decent. The draft pick is icing.
St. Louis get him for this year and most likely will be able to sign him after that. Knizner can take Kelly's role.
Too bad Fowler couldn't have been slipped in.

Notice he speaks to control on players that I called our scraps...doesn't any positive numbers, just control...

No one cares about control of bad players.

Yes they bought low, but they never would’ve gotten this deal last year.

As I said at the beginning, it’s a Really good deal for both teams

Here is the issue I have with this for the Diamondbacks. From 538:

"Kelly and Weaver immediately fill needs on the major league roster. They are not prospects that are years away from the majors, though they also lack star-level upside."

The have lot of control over guys that fill the back end of a competing roster. The notion here is that the Diamondbacks aren't going into rebuild but merely taking a year off but in making this move they gave away their star player. So in order for the Dbacks to win the trade, they need to invest their money in star players in the future.

If its a full-on rebuild, the guys they chose dont have a high enough upside. Stat nerds would say that if you're getting rid of someone like Goldy then you need to do a deep rebuild for two or three years. Cardinals have been bucking the trend because they're in a fairly unique situation in sports where they basically have a market to themselves and actually have incentive to compete every year.

I wouldn't be shocked if Matt Carpenter ends up in the AL somewhere. He has been one of my favorite players but the biggest issue with the Cardinals roster right now is defense. I guess it depends on what his trade value is at this point but the Goldy move means the Cardinals probably have another trade in them.
