Players should be paid for their current production only. Each contract should be based on incentives only. This would mean that they would be paid less per year for poorer production. More for better production etc.

YOU hit on an unpopular idea Northeast. Nearly every other industry besides Pro Sports and Entertainment in general pays people by the standard of performance and what an individual brings to the business model of increasing profits and production.

Not in the two aforementioned arenas. There, people are paid gobs of money regardless based on supposed market forces which are created by white dudes with way too much money and basic shit-for-brains! It is high time we go retro as you suggested and stop this insanity of paying people gobs of money just because the fans won't stop funding this out-of-control golden goose.

That is the way Baseball used to work before the Catfish Hunter FA. The Yankees screwed it up giving him multi-years guaranteed in the mid 70's.

And he rewarded the Yankees first with a 23-5 season then with three straight pennants from 1976 to 1978, winning two. No stopping baseball when they saw that.

I like the general idea. But how would you pay a guy like Santana? I already cited his overall '18 production, 2nd on the team in important stats except BA. They'd need to have some sophisticated scheme giving weight to various metrics. Pay by WAR? Wait a minute - we're back to Flex and a Moneyball variation.

We'll never go back because every team wants an end of the year party. Some guys are so skilled and valuable they're in a league of their own. Take away the bidding on them and it seems we go back to the days of the reserve clause. Set bidding limitations and then we're communists.

If Santana needed to hit for a higher average than .250 to get more money he would have done better. IMO.

You know I think it was Andy Messersmith who was the 1st FA. I am getting older, and forget things. that opened the door to movement. Of course the Yankees paid insane amounts that other teams could not afford to keep their own players.

It doesn’t really matter who was first. The whole idea of selling your proven skills to a team for large amounts of cash is what guys really wanted. It had it’s scary moments in the beginning.
In looking at Hunter’s story, right after becoming a free agent, he was quoted as saying to his wife, something like, “Damn, I don’t belong to anybody!”

You can blame unions for this
Unions will never accept any stipulation based on performance
I am not currently in a union job right now but in my many years of working I have been in union shops and it is frustrating

I like to think of myself as a hard worker and go 100% all of the time
In my experience I have been told politely and told threateningly to slow down - we don't want the company thinking they can expect that kind of work out of the employees and you are making other co-workers look bad
I would say most union shops have an unwritten rule about how much work/performance can be done

Just my 2 cents based on my experience and observations

This type of nonsense happens more than it should. Keep working hard and ignore them. I went through the same thing and then I was promoted. Things changed when I became their boss!

I had my own union experience working for a large Naval ship contractor. I was asked to join the union but since I had previously worked as a consultant in the business, I had to pass on the union fees and they hated it. I recall overhearing their "enforcer" or "hitman" asking my boss, "Jim, what the hell's the matter with him?" LOL.

I seemed to be ruining their recruitment success. Odd things then occurred, like being cited for leaving my safe unlocked, exposing Secret documents, unfair performance rating, trashing my desk, etc. I stayed for a year while searching for my next job and moved on to better things and better money.
