Seems like it will be his highest offer. He will put more fans in the stands. Adding a left handed starting pitcher would help
as well.

Good player but NO athlete is worth that kind of money. Remember what a drag Howard was on the Phillies when he wasn't producing but was getting the big bucks?? This could very well end the same way. It's just too much of a risk.
And don't forget what it will do to the cost of season tickets and attending a game.
Teams can win by developing their own talent.
Exciting thought but I am not for it.

Howard was not the athlete that Harper is. Plus times have changed. Hundreds of millions for a superstud is worth it for a solid chance at being a front runner for years. The return will be huge. I’m tired of watching other teams grab the superstars.

The Phils have a deep wallet. We have a good young team that just needs a few pieces. We’ll likely add a star pitcher to go with Nola, too. I can see the stadium busting at the seams, now.

It's a little of both. We need the talent but baseball is going to realize that the golden goose is limited and they will eventually have to go a stricter salary cap to save the sport from self-desruction. The fans are the key. As long we tolerate these bastards, the prsent system will continue to escalate.

It's crazy. But here's how I look at it. Trout is the highest paid player at $35 mill. Figure Harper for 12 years at $400 mill or $33 mill annual (or 10 yr/$40 mill/yr? LOL). That brings the Phils annual payroll from $96 mill to a measly $129 mill (or $136 mill).

Still far below $221 mill Bosox with four $20 mill players. Damn, then add a started and reliever for $30 mill total and we're still only at $160 mill. We have no choice but to join the party. :dhd:

No matter who the Phillies get, it will not help much. With the strict metrics system that Flex uses we can expect more of the same restrictions on hitters. Also the Phillies plan on getting rid of Franco so Santana can play 3rd. Franco had the highest batting average for the Phillies last season at .270. Plus he fields better at 3rd. Get rid of Santana and put Hoskins at 1st base makes more sense.

THis article over on CBSSports pretty much sums it all up. We can afford people like Harper and Macado but we may not have the developed young core that is required for a couple of superstars to come in propel us over the top like so many other clubs have demonstrated in winning their championships.

The Phillies can afford a Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, but that might not be enough to contend
Except their young core looked like a flawed but near playoff team last season.

I'd keep Franco, 26, who hit .286 vs RHP, 325 ABs, but only .222 vs LHP, 108 ABs. Hard to figure.

However, Santana turned 110 walks into a .354 OBP and 82 runs, but 93 Ks and a .229 BA. Hmm.

Hoskins, Nola, Odubel are among the keepers as well as several others. We could clear out the panty-waste players and bring a few more better players and then add both Harper and Murcado and we may have a contender. We have to get rid of that idiot manager though!!

signing Corbin and Harper would be a dream scenario

LF - Nick Williams
CF - Quinn
RF - Harper
1B - Hoskins
2B - Hernandez/Kingery
SS - Crawford/Kingery
3B - Santana/Franco platoon
C - Alfaro/whoever

SP - Nola, Corbin, Arrieta, Pivetta, Eickhoff

move Velazquez into bullpen as 8th inning guy if you want to go after Kimbrel too

I like your moves and ideas BPNAZ. That would improve our contender-status nearly overnight but we have to get a manage who knows what to do with all of the changes and talent or we are literally pissing into the wind.

It would be nice to have a manager who would play to the players strengths. Flex is clueless!
