Trent Brown is the only guy I would miss. Maybe Flowers. The rest can go away.

I’d like to keep Brown but the OL market and likelihood Wynn can take that spot means he’s probably gone. Flowers should be the priority. He’s one of the few legit defenders they have. Patterson, Gostkowski and Allen would be nice to keep but I wouldn’t break the bank for a specialist, either. Gordon will be restricted and J. Jones will be exclusive rights so they’ll almost definitely be here next year.

It's never too early to look forward. The Eagles are going crazy trying to get either Davonte Parker from the Dolphins or DeSean Jackson from the Buccaneers. They have a bunch of projected draft picks.

When I saw their picks I thought about the Patriots and what they will have and the rumors that they offering high draft picks for a top level WR and Pass Rusher. Below are the actual and projected draft picks that the Pats will have next spring. Trader Bill might be dangling some real bait.

FOXBOROUGH — Because of multiple trades down in this year’s NFL Draft, the Patriots are looking like one of the major players in the 2019 draft.

They will have their own pick in the first round, two picks in the second round (theirs and the Bears’) and as many as three picks in the third round. Those third-rounders include the Lions’ pick and two projected compensatory picks at the end of the round because of the departures of Nate Solder and Malcolm Butler in free agency.

The Patriots traded the No. 51 pick to the Bears for Chicago’s 2019 second-rounder and pick No. 105 this year. No. 105 turned into No. 114 and No. 178 via trade with the Browns, and No. 114 became the Lions’ 2019 third-rounder.

In addition to all that in the first three rounds, the Patriots also would have one pick in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth rounds, including a projected compensatory sixth-round pick for Dion Lewis. They could have three seventh-round picks as well, their own, Philadelphia’s after a late trade on Saturday, and a compensatory pick for Cameron Fleming, though the compensatory pick formula does include a cap for what any team can receive from it and New England might not get every projected extra selection.

In summation, here it is in list form:

■ First round

■ Second round

■ Second round (from CHI)

■ Third round (from DET)

■ Third (compensatory*)

■ Third (compensatory*)

■ Fourth round

■ Fifth round

■ Sixth round (compensatory*)

■ Seventh round

■ Seventh round (from PHI)

■ Seventh round (compensatory*)

*projected

Below are the top ten CAP hits for the Patriots in 2019. My guess is that Gronk and Dwayne Allen may be casualties next year. The Patriots will have to find a couple of replacements or both will have to redo these contracts or play somewhere else. I know I'm delirious but it's a lot of money for these two guys.

Below are the top 10 CAP hits that total $104.5M from an anticipated $185M CAP. These 10 guys eat eating up 56.5% of the CAP. Gronk and Allen hold $19.4M. I'm not even sure that McCourty is worth $13.45M.

Tom Brady QB $27,000,000
Stephon Gilmore CB $14,837,500
Devin McCourty FS $$13,435,000
Rob Gronkowski TE $12,000,000
Dont'a Hightower OLB $10,375,000
Marcus Cannon RT $7,550,000
Dwayne Allen TE $7,400,000
Shaq Mason G $7,400,000
Adrian Clayborn DE $6,000,000
Kyle Van Noy ILB $5,916,668

A 41 year old quarterback making $27 million????? Dump him!

Reality:
Clayborn and Allen are disposable - (unless you move Gronk)
Hightower still has not gotten back to form but key to defense?
McCourty and Gilmore are the only reasons we're not the 32nd place defensive backfield in NFL
Time to consider losing Waddle and Cannon - not pretty but likely. Who do you overpay to keep 1?

Tom Brady QB $27,000,000 ( There is not a choice to be made here, not anymore )
Stephon Gilmore CB $14,837,500 ( If we get a decent #2 I feel he is really safe )
Devin McCourty FS $$13,435,000 ( Ain't going anywhere IMO although I can see the Pats risking this loss)
Rob Gronkowski TE $12,000,000 ( Bye Rob tired of you being paid to sit, Enjoy Buffalo)
Dont'a Hightower OLB $10,375,000 ( Iffy to me, hurt a lot, seems to have lost a step but is a leader, goes nowhere.
Marcus Cannon RT $7,550,000 ( When healthy Good RT stays)
Dwayne Allen TE $7,400,000 (Cya let both TEs go grab a FA or draft two. Eric Ebron is a FA on TE Heavy team_
Shaq Mason G $7,400,000 ( I like him a lot he stays. )
Adrian Clayborn DE $6,000,000 (Thanks Bye)

What you really need to look at with those guys is the dead money/cap savings. E.g., even if you didn't like Shaq, he's not going anywhere b/c it would cost them $12M on the cap to get rid of him, and Gilmore would only save $325K. I would agree a lot of those guys are not performing up to their cap hits any longer and will need to restructure or get sent packing. I could see them trying to keep the band together for one last swing at it with Brady, too, though.

Pretty tough Yankee. I believe at least some of this is correct. Some will be spared because we really can't replace everybody we want to, when we want to. Then again, opportunities will come up that will allow even more to be replaced....

Gronk said on Monday that 2018 might be his last. Too much pain to deal with that isn't there during the off season. He's never spent one cent of any of his salary. He's only spent about 25% of all of promitional and advertising monies. Considering that he's just 30 years old and has a multitude of opportunities in front of him that don't require exposing his body to 20-24 weeks of physicaql punishment every year, retiring might be the smartest thing he could do.

I would say that about 1/2 to 3/4 of that list is gonna be hitting the road after this season.

I think we are going to see a major shakeup after this season ends and quite a bit more than the usual roster turnover.

My guess is that both kickers, Waddle, Trent Brown and Trey Flowers will be back and (because it is such a difficult position to find NFL quality talent) at least 2 of the 3 CBs return as well.

Rob Gronkowski’s Brother Hints At Star’s Frustration, Need For ‘More Freedom’

He was pissed at the incentive based contract...and yet he is FAR from reaching ANY of the incentives.
Yeah, as much as I appreciate watching him play and everything he has done for the Pats, it may be time to stop abusing that big bod.

He only has so many miles left and he's been own some rough roads.

Gronk took home more cash in pocket than any TE in the league last year. And still has the 4th-highest AAV of any TE in the league, on a contract he signed over 6 years ago. So, no, Chris, he was not paid like a mediocre TE.

How many have performed as well as he has over the previous six seasons. Not one season, all six. What makes Gronk valuable is that he can block at the line of scrimmage, has above average speed, has a unique size to go with that speed and has incredible upper body and arm strength. He's truly a one of a kind. The problem that he's dealing with is that TEs of a much less caliber are getting as much, if not more money and are still not coming close to a top level performance. That's because the TE has becoime a "must have" player and GMs and Coaches are paying 2nd level players, 1st level money.

From the side line he has no speed, no blocking, no upper body strength.
Not Bill's fault other teams are over paying second rate players.
I understand he has put his body on the line for the Pats, and I am greatful for the two Lombardi's he has helped bring to New England, but he was paid his agreed upon contract to do that. With incentives.
I truly, truly hope he heals up and comes back and plays productively for 10 more seasons.

But I don't think it will happen, nor do I think he deserves more than a heavy incentive based contract to return if he does want to continue.

Over the past six seasons he has missed what 22 games? That's 22 games sat out, not to mention games played where he basically a decoy or scare tactic or simply a lineman.

IMO Gronk has been well paid for what he has done. I would be really surprised if he comes back next year which means this will be yet another position the Pats have to consider in the draft. And I don't think it's a good year for TEs, I think there are maybe three worth noting. Fent from Iowa, the kid from Missouri and Smith from Bama. This means the Pats may have to reach a little.
