There is obviously friction for the reasons you stated.

But, that's not why he asked to be traded.

All that was happening during the Season.

He didn't ask for a trade until he realized he wasn't getting that 10 mil bump in salary this year.

Via Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic:

There were reports of friction between Butler, Towns and Wiggins, but sources say that is not the main reason Butler has decided to move on. Butler was hoping for a renegotiation and extension of his contract this summer, one that would have raised his salary for 2018-19 to $30 million and added another four years and $145 million on to that. But the Timberwolves would have had to cut an enormous amount of salary to pull that off and deemed it unreasonable if they wanted to stay competitive in the near term.

I wonder if Butler asked to renegotiate to give him an excuse to demand a trade?

What I mean by that is, to demand a trade because of friction between him and his teammates would be bad optics and could cause teams to shy away from him, making it more difficult to move him (like the Wolves trade demands are currently doing).

But if he knew the Wolves weren't going to pay him, he demands a trade, claims it's about money and he doesn't look like a guy who can't get along with his teammates.

I disagree.

If I were a team considering dealing for Jimmy Butler, today's practice would make me want him more. He is a competitor. It is pretty clear that wiggins and Townes are notable Butler is right to call them out. If he isn't traded, maybe, just maybe these public reports will light a fire in those two.

Give me a 2 way player with that motor any day.
hes just a POS though.

You are getting paid millions of dollars- on a team that has a ton of talent. You have one year left on your deal.

Why not play out the contract that YOU SIGNED that pays YOU MILLIONS OF DOLLARS-

why is okay for these guys to just whine and piss and moan there way out of a contract that they voluntarily signed. There is 1 year left on his deal!!!!

be a professional- if you REALLY dont like it there- tell the Twolves- i do not intend to resign at the end of the year just letting you know.

Do that instead of whining and complaining and acting like a little cry baby. BOO HOOO you are getting paid millions under a contract that you voluntarily signed on a team with a bunch of talent. WAAA WAAA WAAAA WAAA.

its revolting.

He's not getting out of his contract.

this is the kind of bs that pisses me off about fans. They don't get the facts remotely right.

He asked for a trade. The Wolves told him not to come to practice for a while.

Frankly, if the NBA did the CORRECT thing and let every team offer the same max contract, you wouldn't have this problem. He would be far more likely to play out his deal if the Nets were allowed to be, you know...American, and offer the same deal as the Twolves can this summer.

what facts are wrong here?

he asked for a trade and is publicly trying to whine his way out of town. He is making himself a problem to get himself moved out of town.

When he signed his contract was there a clause in it that said "Well my contract is for 4 years but in the last year i have the right to whine my way into a trade to a team that will give me the supermax?"

there's nothing that says he can't do that.

there's also nothing that says the wolve have to accomodate him. It is just smart business to get something for him rather than lose him for nothing.

he's also going to undermine any chance townes has at being the lead of the team (which of course, isn't really necessary, but if they want him to, it won't happen with Butler there), they need him out.

Again, the team excused him from the pre-season. he's not sitting out or holding out.

He hasn't asked out of his contract, he asked for an extension. When the Wolves said no, he asked for a trade.

If he holds out, you might have a point. But, so far, there's been no talk of him holding out, so you don't.

he went to practice, started swearing at the GM, was combative with the whole team, and then left early to do a TV interview.

ASking for a trade is one thing- while i think its bullshit to demand a trade when you still have a year left on your contract that you voluntarily signed- thats one thing- while i dont agree with it and think its gutless- begging out of a contract you voluntarily signed- what he has done is on a whole idfferent level.

to whine in the media, to start swearing at the GM, to call out the coach and your teammates and make it a big production by running your mouth to the media is a totally different thing.

If he wanted out- i would prefer he went to the Twolves privately and said "I dont want to resign here- can you trade"?---- all he is doing is being a baby and destroying any type of leverage the Twolves have by acting like a petulant child and making it this huge production in the media.

he cant even get the extension he wants right now because of how the CBA is structured. If the Twolves gave him every last dime that they are allowed to give him at this point- it wouldnt make sense for him to take it since the raises he can get when he hits FA are so much more.

He wants to be traded to a team that will give him the supermax after this season. He knows the Twolves wont do it- and if he leaves in FA he wont be eligible for the true supermax with how the CBA is setup- so he is trying to force his wa to a team that will give him that insane contract that will be the 5 year deal etc.

i just think how he has acted has been ridiculous- and the stunt he pulled at practice is revolting if you ask me.

he did what you said he should do first.

now he's making a point.

but i agree it's not a coincidence that he came back when all these media people were coming in.

But they had their chances to move him. It's clear they chose Wiggins over Butler. And that was a mistake.

frankly, the NBA continues to be shortsighted and does this to themselves.

If everyone could offer him the supermax, we wouldn't have this conversation.

And it was shortsighted because temas can't afford more than like 2 supermax players anyway unless they draft them.

another short-sigthted CBA move, just like taking away the sign and trade, which is what allowed the pistons to get value for grant hill and win a title. No S&T for Hill, no title.

Oh, I agree with what you say re: why he's doing it. As I posted earlier, I think he just wants the hell out because of the toxic relationship with Wiggins and KAT.

He also knows the Wolves aren't going to pay him what he wants, so he's using that as his excuse, because leaving over beef with teammates looks worse than leaving over money.

Having said that though, unless he holds out, he's fulfilling his contract which is where I disagree with your post.

Imo, it's similar to Kobe's trade demand in the summer of 2008(?). He wanted a trade, the Lakers said, "Fat chance, you're under contract" and, if memory serves, never even entertained any offers. Kobe shut the hell up, Bynum emerged, they got Pau and the rest is history.

I think where the Wolves messed this up is they started actually listening to offers, but have been asking for far too much for a player that everyone knows wants out.

Yeah, that's a bit of a tough call. On the one hand, I agree that teams should be able to offer the same money.

On the other hand, they started doing it this way to give "smaller market" teams more of an even playing field re: keeping their own star players. Or at least keeping them longer than they could in the past.

Kind of a tough fix. If they allow every team to offer the same money, it gives the players more options (at least from a money perspective) and is more fair to the players.

But, it becomes harder for teams in smaller markets/less desirable locations to keep their star players which isn't exactly "fair" for the fans of those teams.

not realted- but as i remember- the deal with the Bulls was done for Kobe until Kobe vetoed it since there would be little left for him there after the eal.

You might be right. Now that you mention it, I vaguely remember the Bulls inquiring, but I don't remember it ever getting very far.

Maybe because Kobe vetoed? Maybe because the Lakers never seriously considered it?

I just remember the whole thing blew over pretty quickly.

amd i gotta say-

i dunno if i would even pay Jimmy Butler the big big max deal he would be able to get by a team with his Bird Rights next offseason.

Would Jimmy Butler actually sign a contract extension?

Butler will be eligible for 5 years 190 million t oa team with his Bird Rights

you want to pay Jimmy Butler 38M a year....he will be 30 years old at the beginning of next season

you want to pay Jimmy Butler 42 Million in his age 34 season and 43 million in his age 35 season?

sounds like a disaster to me.

That time Kobe Bryant almost became a Bull — the first time

Reports centered on Bryant, then a free agent, starting over with the Clippers, but he said he and wife were looking for homes and researching schools in the Chicago area. O’Neal had heard the rumors, but didn’t believe it at the time.

“Oh yeah, we were looking for places in Chicago, man,” Bryant said. “We were flying up there to meet with (Jerry) Reinsdorf and (John) Paxson.”

O’Neal chimed in, “You would leave sunny California to go to cold-ass Chicago?”

Kobe Bryant says a trade to Bulls nearly happened before Lakers sent Shaq to Miami

Yeah, he's good enough to be paid a fair bit more than he's making, but I wouldn't want to give him what he's asking for.

He's a great player and I love his game, but he's the all star level guy you add to get your team over the top. Not the guy you build a title contender around.

lol I liked the "well, there goes Chicago" line when he heard Shaq demanded a trade.

Houston might as well considering what they’re paying Chris Paul then. Go all in now.
