NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. -- Jordan Spieth is going to miss the Tour Championship for the first time in his professional career. And he will face a possible penalty from the PGA Tour for failing to play enough events this year as part of its field enhancement criteria.

The three-time major champion, who was in contention to win both the Masters and The Open this year, didn't do enough at the other tournaments nor at the BMW Championship to advance to the season-ending tournament in Atlanta, which is for the top 30 players in FedEx Cup points.

He ended up 31st, having never finished worse than 15th in the final standings in each of the past five years. Spieth won the FedEx Cup in 2015.

"I was in control of my own destiny and didn't have it this week,'' said Spieth, who shot 73 on Monday at Aronimink Golf Club to tie for 54th. "Was riding some momentum (after the Dell Technologies Championship) but all in all, just game kind of got a little off.''

25 event requirement seems like alot when you plan your year around majors... but I would assume a guy struggling like Speith did this year would try and play more, not less to try and play through it.

You would think especially considering he's what the head of that committee or whatever... However, it could be pretty hard for a player to do that if they are hurt, no?

He obviously needs to talk to his caddy more, in between shots.

25 is not a ton considering its a wrap around season totaling 40+ events. The big names like to take the Oct/Nov/Dec time frame off and tee it up in HI like they always did.

IIRC Spieth is getting married soon...maybe that was weighing on him, some injury, etc.

Regardless, he'll get some type of slap on the wrist and be back out there for next year.

Maybe if he quits going to the Bahamas and so on, and works on his game he might have made it.
Dude is a shell of his former self. Just like Day and Mcelroy. They can't win anymore.

Yep...hard to say about Spieth, he wants that grand slam...these guy make millions off the course as well, considerably more actually at some point you want to indulge...Rory probably couldn't care less, much like Fowler wants a major, but he's got it too good to bitch about it.

Day's had some personal issues, family, and imo he bulked up too much.

Yes they make millions on the course but they also make millions of dollars OFF the course... It is a two way street... Sometimes hard to balance

Too young to be a shell of his former self, unless it's compared to junior high.

This is largely why imo there will never be another Jack or Tiger in my lifetime...the money is simply too great now...when a golfer with 3 or 4 majors and less than 20 total wins has a $200 mil bank acct...he's never going to be hungry enough to chase majors.

Exactly. Add to the fact that these guys get sponsored by NetJet and every private plan company out there and give them trips, they are more focused on that than anything else

He sure is turning out to be a whiney little bitch, isn't he? Refused to play with Reed in the Ryder Cup because he got his ass handed to him in the Masters by Reed among other petty grievances.
