Nothing left to say about this year. Thinking ahead about next year with salaries and thoughts. Maybe a bold move. Remember when the Pirates were aggressive when signing Russell Martin?)

1.Starling Marte OF $10,000,000
2.Ivan Nova SP $8,000,000 (2019 last year of contract - try to trade?)
3.Chris Archer SP $7,666,668
4.Gregory Polanco OF $6,100,000
5.David Freese UTIL $6,000,000 (2019 - option - bring him back)
6. Jung Ho Kang 3B/SS $5,500,000 (2019 - option - bring him back)
7.Felipe Rivero RP $4,000,000
8.Corey Dickerson OF 3 arby (2017-$5,950,000 - try a 2-year $20Mish contract)
9.Adeiny Hechavarria SS FA (2017-$5,900,000 - try to resign at $3Mish)

10.Keone Kela RP 2 arby (2019-$3Mish)
11.Jameson Taillon SP TC ($575kish)
12.Josh Bell 1B TC ($575kish)
13.Adam Frazier UTIL TC ($575kish)
14.Trevor Williams SP TC ($575kish)
15.Elias Diaz C TC ($575kish)
16.Joe Musgrove SP TC ($575kish)
17.Colin Moran 3B TC ($575kish)
18.Kyle Crick RP TC ($575kish)
19. Steven Brault RP TC ($575kish)
20. Edgar Santana RP TC ($575kish)
21. Richard Rodriguez RP TC ($575kish)
22. Kevin Newman SS TC ($575kish)
23. Jose Osuna OF/1B TC ($575kish)
24. Jacob Stallings C TC ($575kish) - maybe a solid defensive vet.
25. Daniel Murphy 2B (2 yrs/$26Mish) the bold move.

GONE:

Francisco Cervelli C $11,500,000 (last year of contract -trade due to Diaz/reduced catching)
Josh Harrison 2B $10,500,000 (2019 option $10.5M, 2020 option $11.5M - Release or Trade)
Jordy Mercer SS GONE (2017-$6,750,000 - Released/Contract Expired)
Sean Rodriguez UTIL (GONE - Released/Contract Expired)

That gives the Pirates 14 players under team control making the league minimum totaling around $8,000,000 combined and approximately $70,000,000 for 11 players not making the league minimum.

This could create an interesting, deeper line-up:
Marte, Murphy, Dickerson, Polanco, Kang/Freese, Bell, Diaz, Newman

I highly doubt they bring Kang back at that price. Hasn't played in the Majors in going on three full years, struggled in AAA and will be 32. Seems like a NRI waiting to happen. Not so sure Cervelli is gone, either, with this 1st base experiment and Josh Bell not producing the way you'd hope. Would market him in a trade but also wouldn't settle.

I like what you're thinking with Murphy though. Him or Dozier would work for me. Keep Freese, try to keep Hechavarria as insurance.

2019 is not looking as promising as it looked at the time of the Archer trade when everything seemed to be coming together for the Pirates. That's for sure.

Archer has been a bust and Marte and Polanco have reverted back to their old inconsistent selves.

I really would not expect any additions of consequence during the winter. As far as Bob Nutting is concerned, he got at least a couple years worth of positive public relations by acquiring Archer.

Well Freese and Hechavarria got dumped.

Freese isn't the greatest option, but this tells me Colin Moran is going into the 2019 season as the unchallenged starter. Hechavarria I'd have liked for the bench next year, but nothing says they can't go re-sign him.

They freed up some money. Woohoo, this team doesn't exactly have a good track record of doing anything productive with "financial flexibility."

I have very little faith in Neal Huntington in what will be a crucial off-season.

The biggest item for me is do they really want to be contender next season or not? I have a feeling Marte or Polanco might be dealt and the later is true.

Same here when you had McCutchen in his prime and a young Ace in Cole he did nothing to get this team past a wild card pretender. They are stuck at an unfair disadvantage with an owner that won't spend and a system that helps the larger markets. Not using that as an excuse for NH but it doesn't help.

I dont think either has much trade value. Neither has lived up to expectations, we might as roll the dice and see what happens.

I bet we pick up a rh bench bat to platoon with Moran. The value of okay veterans went into the toilet last offseason, it will be interesting to see if it happens again.

I'd hope so but the only problem is the free agent pool at 3B is thin and old. Donaldson and Eduardo Escobar highlight that area, and I don't think they go after either. Would probably need to be via trade.

I agree with Polanco but Marte has more value due to his defensive abilities (minus last night's mess up in CF). The suspension doesn't help but that is easily forgotten since he has put up similar numbers. Finally, if someone like Jason Heyward had value so does Marte.

LOL yeah that one was stupid....Never thought he was good because his comment about being outbid proves the point. If he knew the market and wanted the player he should have used the resources. IE...Glasnow, Matthews and Baz (obviously not around at that time but similar talent) could have been dealt to sweeten any offer. He has over valued prospects for way too long! The one time he didn't with Archer does this team no good since they really didn't have a chance. The only way to prove the deal was worth it is to pay up to FA's or make the same type of trades this off season.

Sean Rodriguez will be available.

:behindsofa:

Seriously though instead of going with someone of value they would pick up Andrew Romine.
Which just continues down the same path of mediocrity.

Let’s hope the release of Rodriguez spells the end of his tenure in Pittsburgh.

I think the trade of Freese means Kang's option will be exercised if the Pirates feel he is healthy.

Harrison has supposedly told reporters how much he wants to stay in Pittsburgh. I think this translates to "I want to make 10.5M next year and there is no way I will get even half that if I am on another team." I think it is time to move on from Harrison.

The Pirates could bring in Murphy or Dozier for a little above what Harrison would receive.

Second is really the only place that I could see them bringing a FA in unless they decide to move on from Dickerson. I think Murphy is the type of hitter that could make everyone in the lineup better as the offense gets in these funks and they do not have a solid veteran bat to get them out of the funks.

If Kang can come back strong then maybe even rotate him between 3B and SS?

Marte, Murphy, Dickerson, Polanco, Kang, Bell, Moran, Diaz

I think they are going to give Newman 1st crack at SS next season.
Hopefully Kang could come back and be the platoon with Moran and SS if Newman falters.

Also Kramer just got recalled, hopefully he will play everyday at 2B the rest of the way to help get a barometer if he could fill a void.

For 2019 I think the only place I see pretty well set is the RP:

Crick, Kela and Vazquez seem to be pretty set in stone with Brault as the LOOGY.

The Rotation is pretty set too, Archer Taillon, Musgrove, Williams and Nova with Kingham in the bp and Keller and Kuhl in AAA.

Good point. If the curve can continue Musgrove, Taillion and Williams should improve with Nova an innings eater with Archer at the top. Their pitching, in theory, should be strong.

Williams is 9th in era in the NL, that is looking like one of the biggest trade ripoffs we have ever had.
