I was surprised there was no thread on this.

I generally side with management when it comes to training camp hold outs. But I think that Earl is a special case. First of all he is on the last year of his contract. Second of all he is one of the leaders of this team and has never been a problem for the club. Third of all, we need him to perform well this year for the defense to have a chance of being good.

I get that teams never want to look like they can be blackmailed which is why I generally side with management but I do think this is a special situation.

You mentioned something like this in the training camp thread last week and I have to take the same tact with my reply in disagreeing with you. I don't think he wants to play for the Seahawks unless we throw a bunch of money at his feet. Him running into the Cowboys locker room last season telling Garrett to call him did sit too well for me. If he was committed to Seattle, I'd have a different opinion, of course.

I see both sides but I really don't want to lose such a great player.

Thomas has been THE best free safety in the league over recent years. The only player who has come close is Eric Berry but he has missed far more time due to injury. He is the cog that covers so many points that he allows the rest of the DBs to play up in aggressive press coverage, run first D, or blitz. Without Thomas our D would have never been able to do this.
Bennett and Avril were both good but neither were top in the league at their positions.
Sherman was debatably at the top but I think that, as I stated above, Thomas was part of the reason he was able do what he did.
I have always thought Kam was one of the best safeties in the league at his peak but even more so than with Sherman he owes his game to Thomas. Without Thomas' amazing ability to cover the field I think that Kam is closer to a slightly better than peak Ken Hamlin as opposed to the all-pro he became. I don't mean that as an insult as peak Hamlin was pretty good but I always thought that Kam would have been exposed a little if he had played with a normal FS instead of the best around.

I know that he is pushing 30, had an injury himself, and is now in a battle with management but to me it is ridiculous that people are talking a 3rd or worse for Thomas. He is worth FAR more. I wouldn't even be happy with a 2nd as I would want at least a first and probably a bit more.

Huh, sounds like we should have judged him on his past actions, and given him the benefit of the doubt...

Heh, I kill me.

Not really any new information or "aha" moments from that article... Earl may have been traded already if he would've kept his mouth shut...

I certainly don't get the feeling he wants to be traded. If he really wanted to leave he would just have to wait out the season and leave.

I really think way too much has been made out of one incident.

Had he stayed in the Hawks Locker room in Dallas, yeah he would have been resigned or traded all ready.

When you are signed to a contract it's like a marriage, his actions was a type of infidelity. For those married what would your wife do if you were caught on camera going into some other females bedroom screaming baby i always loved you, marry me?

Here's What's Actually Going On | By Earl Thomas

Did you guys see the article Earl released?

I read this yesterday. Well-written and a good explanation. I think a lot of us just expect these guys to just shut-up (which, frankly, Earl always has) and play because they get paid so much and "they signed a contract". The fact is, those contracts are only contracts on one-side (the players). For the teams, they are a general agreement that can be broken at any time with minimal repercussions. I have a difficult time being angry at players for taking this tact to secure their future, given the facts that they have a very short (typically) window to make their money and they are putting their long and short-term health on the line every time they step on the field coupled with how NFL contracts work.

I really hope that they come to an agreement with ET; failing that, I do hope that they trade him to a team that will sign him long-term.

Earl just saw many of his teammates that he played with for almost his entire career retire or be pushed out unceremoniously. I get that he wants at least a little security.

I look at this differently. Player get guarantees to cover them in case of a career ending injury and/or medical problems later in life.
Well Thomas got paid almost 20 million in guaranteed money and hasn't suffered a career ending injury, if he does in the future he's already been paid for that.
Now he wants to collect a another guarantee in case of a career ending injury? Hasn't he already collected that? Not only that, but he says he not honoring the last year of his contract that he signed with guarantees for him, unless they pay another guarantee for injury? IDK sounds greedy to me.

The legion of boom is dead. Earl Thomas isn’t going to contribute to another title contending Seahawks team. They should trade him for a pick or two while he still has value. By the time that defense is good enough to contend, Earl Thomas will be oft injured or retired.

I feel like you are letting the people with the "real" money (billions, not millions) and who are making "real" money on the NFL off the hook, here. They aren't putting anything on the line here (remember, they are making hundreds of millions or more, not risking it). The players are literally risking their lives, and many of them are significantly shortening their lives (I would absolutely not trade lives with Junior Seau).

I'm not saying that the owners don't deserve their profits, because they did something to have that much wealth to be able to support a professional franchise, but getting angry at players who can only make money for a very short time and typically are foregoing development of any other career-skill for trying to maximize their income in that very short time is not very fair.

If they change the CBA to fully-guarantee contracts, I'll change my tune, but as long "contracts" are only a matter of convenience for the owners, I'm not begrudging a player holding out in the last year of their contract. The vast majority of us can (if the opportunity is there) change jobs for more money and a better opportunity on two-weeks notice (or less).

Thanks for clearing that up.

The REASON he hasn't been traded, is Seattle is waiting for a fair offer.

What would you consider fair? I think the best you could hope for is a 4th rounder and that might be too much seeing as how other teams can sign him next year if they choose to do so.

Heh, see you can't stay consistent for two consecutive posts.

In YOUR post you said a 'couple of picks.' So let's start there. That's certainly better than 'A' fourth rounder.

If a team makes a fair offer, then Seattle deals him. If they don't, Seattle won't. And since Earl, like all other NFL players with non-guaranteed deals, will have to either forego his owed money and sit out, or report and get paid, HE'LL REPORT.

Which is what they almost always do.

A pissed off Earl STILL makes Seattle a better team than a fourth round pick in an upcoming draft.

And I don't deal him for any less than a second.

Yeah, multiple 6th or 7th rounders. I said 4th because I think everyone would rather have that.

And 1 year of earl Thomas vs a roll of the dice for the next 4 years is what you should be looking at.

On the contrary, what if he played out his last year of his contract and stunk up the joint or missed games due to injury... Would the team get their money back? No... He would still see the 10 million... He was more than happy when he was getting guaranteed money (which was front loaded)... He's not honoring his contract... Interesting how many fans tend to just dismiss that... He got his money and now he wants more even though the club hasn't accrued the productivity for what they've paid him so far... I see his side but I also see the clubs side...
