as time goes on im not surprised that they are more keeping there thumb on how many innings and how many pitches a pitches pitch. cause as time goes on they learn more and more about the impacts it has on the arm. back in the day they didnt have this info. so there not be over cautious in my eyes there being smart

100 MPH down the middle is still gonna get hit hard. Maddux was basically a soft tosser that could locate and was smarter than his opponent. Worked fine for him.

100mph pitches will get hit hard, but they won't get hit very often.

Strikeout rates and pitch speed go hand in hand (both have been increasing historically and in recent years).

Mays only hit a HR because Marichal threatened to hit him in the head with a bat if he didn't get the damned game over with in a hurry.
Mays started into his high pitched giggle and then saw that Juan was just staring him down like Lou Grant after Ted Baxter mispronounced "Nixon"...so Willie took a handful of greenies and bombed the ball out of the park.
John Roseboro should have recognized that stare before whistling a toss back to Koufax past Marichal's head....

That is the definition of a Warrior!!!
Eh, Herb Score's eye got knocked out of its socket by a Gil McDougald line drive and was only taken out of the game because the fans in the box seats were vomiting at the sight of the eyeball flailing around as he threw. Herb showed up at the park the next day with his eyeball still laying on his cheek, saying he didn't think it was worth the cost of a doctor's visit...he only relented and went to the hospital when the team trainer couldn't make the peeper stay in place with a hammer and some chewing gum.
THAT'S a MAN!!!

I hate to defend modern day pitchers.........but.....
They are throwing at a higher speed and throwing 92 or 93 mph cutters.
Pitchers arms, now days, can't take the punishment. And the kids, now days, start throwing hard at a younger age.
1604 Pitchers, have undergone TOMMY JOHN SURGERY since September, 1974. (college and pro baseball)
14 pitchers in MLB, just this year, have undergone TJ surgery.
I'm not sure, the human body, can take, throwing in the upper 90s......

FAKE NEWS!!

OK, I lied about Score. It was an extremely serious injury and I'm sure it was horrifying to see it happen. Herb himself said that he felt that injury itself didn't shorten his career, though, he just tore a tendon in his elbow after he came back and was actually pitching quite well...though that could have been related to his layoff from the eye injury, I suppose.

The thing that we forget is that it's always been common for pitchers to come up to MLB with great fastballs and stuff and then hurt themselves pretty quickly...look up Smokey Joe Wood and Ewell "The Whip" Blackwell, although there are probably at least hundreds more to point to. Frank Tanana was an example of a guy who blew his arm out when young and lost his incredible fastball, but was able to pitch for several more years as a junkballer...I think Frank was arguably much better than Nolan Ryan in their years together on the Angels until Tanana blew his arm out sometime in '77.

The thing that was different in the old days was that long hits were much less common and there were a fair number of hitters who just poked at the ball and rarely hit for extra bases. In his (probably ghostwritten) book "Pitching In A Pinch", Christy Mathewson wrote about how he didn't put extra stuff on his pitches until there was a runner in scoring position or he was facing one of the true long hitters of his time (like Honus Wagner). Guys like him were throwing 300-400 innings because they weren't throwing at 100% effort most of the time, not because they were supermen.
Nowadays, almost any hitter is at least some threat to put one deep in the gap or over the fence, so modern pitchers can't really afford to pick their spots to put full effort into their pitches. The game has slowly been evolving this way since 1910 or so.

BTW, my daughter is a pitcher and has worn a mask since she started taking lessons around 8 years old.
She got to college and the coach told her to lose the mask.
The DD found a recent story about a college pitcher getting hit in the face and suffering eye damage as well as numerous broken bones and the coach was not impressed.
Then she told the coach she would probably not pitch well without one since she had literally never thrown to a batter without one on and the coach relented.
She is right on the edge of a major trend, very few senior pitchers in her conference wore masks when she was a freshman but a majority of the other freshman pitchers did wear them. I think softball pitchers in the past generally only wore masks after they had already suffered a facial injury...my daughter has had a few rocket comebackers hit her in the past and had to take some time off after one bruised her shin pretty badly, I think I would just die on the spot if I saw one like that hit her in the face.

more proof he got a boo boo:suds:

Braves placed LHP Max Fried on the 10-day disabled list with a left middle finger blister.

Fried had to exit Thursday's start in Milwaukee after coming down with the blister and it's going to cost him at least the next week and a half of action. It's unclear at this point who will replace the left-hander in the Braves' rotation.

Pitchers used to soak their hands in pickle brine to avoid blisters...the bad side effect was waking up with drunk Germans sucking on their fingers!
