We will find out later this year with machado/harper both expecting big contracts but they are younger so will only be 35 in 10 years:suds:

I guess the real test is what donaldson gets but injuries have derailed him

Those 2 will be the exceptions. Because they are entering Free agency so young and they both are still play good defense. Those contracts will likely work out for the most part. Donaldson I think has to settle for a 1 year "prove it" deal.

Chipper missed a lot of time those last few years, so that hurts the case to say he 'aged well.' From age 33 on, he missed over 40 games per year on average.

Very true. He was productive when he was in there though.

also, he didnt "decline significantly" from 32-34

age 32 .877 OPS (he was .942 career going into that season)
age 33 .794 OPS ("papis dead" season) still had 28/99
age 34 .899 OPS, back on track

ortiz had ONE season under .850 OPS here....and that was it.

Ortiz from 29-31 - .306 AVG, 1.038 OPS
Ortiz from 32-34 - .257 AVG, .854 OPS

You don't consider a batting average dropping ~50 points and an OPS dropping ~200 points to be a significant decline?

Not to mention, his total WAR from ages 29-31 was 17.4, compared to just 5.8 from 32-34.

Not sure you understand what decline means then....he was a lot worse from at ages 32-34 than he was at ages 29-31. That by definition is a decline, no?

If a guy has a 1.300 OPS one year and a 1.000 OPS the next year, is that not a significant decline? Doesn't mean he was bad in the worse year, but it was clearly a decline...Regarding Ortiz, I never said he was bad from 32-34, but that stretch was clearly a decline from his prior 3 year stretch.

and then from 35-retirement he was a .953 OPS guy

STILL a "decline" from 29-31. 2 top 10 MVP finishes.

Yep, and at the same time a vast improvement from 32-34, no?

So my point's still there - he declined signficantly from 32-34....

Well the average human being MLB hitter doesn't decline in their early 30s then suddenly get much better from that decline.....usually that decline continues until they're out of baseball (as opposed to ending on a high note).

it's significant, but he was also dealing with a wrist injury from 2008 FWIW. Wrist injuries can affect players for a while and Ortiz did suffer a similar injury in 2014. He missed about a third of the season. he had an abysmal start to 2009 (finished the first two months with a line of .185/.284/.287) with a BABIP well below his career norm (.241 vs career .300) and proceeded to hit .264/.356/.548 over the final four months.

Ortiz pretty much admitted to using PEDs.

Doesn't bother me at all.

What bothers me about Ortiz is the fact that he is the biggest crybaby bitch in baseball history.

He complains a lot, but he wouldn't be in the top 20 of active crybaby bitches if he were playing right now. Much less over the course of history.

I set there and watched him take a pitch right down the middle on a 3-1 count. He hits a single the next pitch, and still gets ejected because the umpire called a pitch down the middle strike 2.

Crybaby bitch. The game is better with him retired.

Danny "Jersey Shore Reject" Valencia does something like that at least once or twice a season.
