Guy's a very good player for the Texans. Good to see their keeping him on board.

B grade.

This makes Benardrick (I mean seriously that name? Whatever) a top 5 paid player at his position. Benardrick is nowhere near the talent level of Wagner/Keuchley, but he's only 25 and should continue to improve. The $21M guaranteed is a plus as Houston can easily move on from him if needed, when Watson (or whoever at QB) requires a major contract. With the departure (officially) of Brian Cushing Houston really can't afford another hole at the linebacker position and Benardrick did lead the team last year in combined tackles.

That said, it's not a bargain signing so I can't give this anything in the A range. The $21M guaranteed keeps this from being a C or lower grade. I think Houston could've had him for $40-45M so it's a slight overpay, but Houston needed to lock in this position, especially after zero draft capital.

Hopefully with all this money that dork can get a proper haircut... and maybe a name change.

Eh for comparision, Walt just posted his grade...

Texans re-sign LB Benardrick McKinney (5 years, $50 million; $21 million guaranteed): C Grade
The Texans once had one of the best front offices in the NFL, but Bill O'Brien has cleaned house in an attempt to surround himself with nothing but "yes men." We're going to see Houston's decision-making decline moving forward, and this is a prime example.

Benardrick McKinney is a decent player. He's solid against the run, he's young (26 in November), and he's been durable, missing just two games in three seasons. However, McKinney is not an elite off-LOS linebacker; in fact, he's not even the best player at his position on the roster (Zach Cunningham.) McKinney is not very good in coverage, so it's puzzling why Houston's new front office is willing to pay McKinney so much.

This isn't a poor move, but it's not a very good one. I think a "C" grade makes sense.

I disagree a bit, I think the $50M is not that big of a factor given Keuchley/Wagner signed their contracts a couple years ago. I agree with Walt that $50M for McKinney is too much money, just not sure I rate it as big of an impact. Houston also has a decent secondary group with Mathieu, Jackson, Joseph, and Reid (R) he I think will be a stud, so not too overly concerned on McKinney's 'not very good in coverage' skills.

I think this is an overpay by the Texans. Good player, but not a building block.
