If anyone gets an extension this year with one year remaining, it needs to be Duane Brown over Earl Thomas... I would even rather give an extension to Frank Clark first over Earl as well... There are other priorities on the team more important than ET, imo... Another reason I am not in favor of giving ET an extension, is RW's contract ends in '19 and we're going to need the cashola... I just don't view ET as the priority... I think the team/fans would end up regretting it...

Definitely would like to see Duane Brown extended. And he's not holding out. Would be a great message to ET by the FO to get Brown done before even talking to ET.

I wouldn't be mad if we added three years to Earl's deal, but not at what he's asking for. I think he'll probably play at a really high level longer than most do, but I agree we would regret some huge contract.

It's all a gamble. If Brown starts breaking down physically, then we'll all regret extending him.

Or any football player's future for that matter. Your future can change on a dime. Look at Ryan Shazier and Jim Kelly. One is just getting the ability to walk again and the other is a cancer survivor.

Which is why I understand ET's holdout but it won't last all season. At most maybe he misses the first two games.

Wouldn't be a good idea on his part.. Especially if he's concerned about getting injured, which is one of the main reasons he wants an extension... Usually guys that hold out of training camps and miss regular season games come back and have poor seasons to their standards, while being more vulnerable to injuries...

Good point, you just have to hope he stays in shape while he holds out.

Agreed... But his position is more valuable than ET so he deserves an extension over ET imo… Frank Clark's position is more important than ET as well... Risking injuries, "breaking down physically" to all three of these guys I put the priority in this order - 1. DB; 2. FC; 3. ET

Well we've seen what the loss of Earl has done to our D in the past, the scoring #'s that resulted. In the LOB days, he was the straw that let Sherm and the rest play the way they do.

I don't disagree that there may be other priorities, both short and long term.

They may let him walk just because of where the team is at. I still say they're waiting to see where they are during/after pre-season.

I'm sure the Seahawks would love to have him resign, but can't risk guaranteeing a large contract when Thomas is 29. They can let him play out his contract, then let him test the market. He may find that the $ he wants isn't out there, or maybe someone antes up IDK.

I'm not saying he's worth the reported $13 million per that he's looking for, but reports are coming in that the team hasn't talked to Thomas' people since the draft and that there are no indications that the team has offered him anything. It's not an insistence that he has to be re-signed no matter what - it's the apparent "he's not that good anymore" feel of the early posts on the subject I am pointing out. I could just be misinterpreting people's posts - but it's interesting to see the fans act like he needs to be kicked to the curb - the sooner the better.

Last year we drafted 2 Safeties in the 3rd and 4th round... I believe we did so in preparation of this moment... Of course, they're not going to be Earl Thomas but it doesn't mean they aren't bad options behind him... They could turn out to be solid players... And Kam didn't really play much last year either...

Sure they could turn out to be decent players, but they have next to zero experience due to not being good enough to see the field much beyond special teams, with a grand total of 41 defensive snaps between them last year.

Yeah, both Kam and Earl missed time last year - and Bradley McDougal started all 9 games they missed. Maurice Alexander was brought in, and very well could be this seasons McDougal - which would once again push Hill and Thompson back to where they were this past season. We just don't know what we're getting from them - but if Alexander does end up higher on the depth chart then they do - then it's pretty much settled that they'll never start for the Seahawks.

Well players looking for a payday often hurt themselves PR wise with remarks or actions , like Thomas did last season, telling the Cowboys to come after him for example.
It's just hard when a player starts aging and still wants the big dollars. Both players and teams worry about injury. Both sides want protection for injuries.
No easy answer.

I'm torn right down the middle on ET and I am glad I don't have to make that decision.
I don't think he gets traded. If he is only worth a 3rd, then let him play out this year, walk, then we get something near to a 3rd round comp pick for him next year.
If in fact JS has not reached out to ET, I think that is telling. It tells me the FO is not planning on extending him.
You know, I'm getting more and more tired of prima donna athlete's calling these type of shots. ET has already been paid around $70M to play for Seattle and is scheduled to make about $10M this year incl bonus money. So, piss off bud, you're still under contract. Playing for your team mates? Yeah, right. It's only about the money. I get that. Yet, I get the right to bitch when you feel your multi million dollar contract isn't worth showing up for.

Sometimes it’s in the best interest of both player and team to part ways. The team is restocking with young players and giving a big chunk of the salary cap and big guarantees to a aging player, who will need to be replaced soon enough in any case just isn’t in their best interest. Same for the player, finding a team that can and will give him the financial security , because that team is in the hunt to be contender now. No need for hard feelings, just business for both parties.

They had Kam, Earl Thomas and McDougald in front of them... How were they supposed to see the field as rookies? IMO, if Carroll didn't feel good about those two, I would think they would've went after another Safety in this years draft, especially with Kam in limbo and ET's contract status...

And now they have Thomas, McDougal, Alexander and Chancellor (if he can ever come back) ahead of them. I’m not saying they can’t become good players, I’m saying the chances of them ever making it as major contributors on defense at any point in their careers takes a huge hit if they are buried on the depth chart again this season. If they can’t beat Maurice Alexander out this season, then they are most likely nothing more than career special teamers whether Thomas moves on next year or not.

The NFL is the most protected league in terms of being protected from that.
