Exactly what I argued in countless threads on the Seattle boards. They made a decision on what was special about that team, and what gave them the best chance of continuing their success. In the short term that was the D.

In the long term, with Wilson, the answer was going to be different.

What Seattle is doing now is the transition from one era to another.

The only real difference in our take on it, is how 'rocky' that transition is going to be.

I'm choosing to be optimistic. For some reason, you have a huge need to excoriate anyone similarly optimistic.

I've been arguing the same points so I understand where you're coming from.

Both pieces definitely have to work in sync. Brady and Manning are two of the best at making their OL look good when in reality the quality is probably closer to subpar. I've watched plenty of Seattle games though where players were pretty much untouched as they went straight for Wilson. I would put more blame on the OL than I ever would Wilson and his scrambling.

I can't count the number of plays in which not 1, not 2 but 3 defenders would come in untouched on Wilson. While they were terrible in 2017, 2016 defied belief at how bad they were. When you have 3 guys being unblocked that isn't about execution, it's about coaching.

Oh yeah I saw it all of last season. It was tough to watch.

I've only predicted what I think Seattle will do next year. 8-8. I haven't ventured into the future beside saying Seattle will have good cap space next year. With enough cap space, a good draft next year and retaining RW and a couple other key players Seattle should be looking bright come another 2-4 years.
I say 2-4 years because I don't think they had a good draft this year. Combine that with a relatively new offensive line that will take time to gel that takes a couple years. Could Penny be special? Maybe that would likely be the only saving grace to this years draft.
Having said that I've maintained all along this is May. Lots of things can and will happen. I remember a guy getting picked # 199 that faired pretty well so no one can ever be certain. That's why they're called predictions. Otherwise we'd all be millionaires and Vegas would just be a desert again.

So which Seahawks draft picks do you think will be busts?

First to be clear you used the word bust not me. Bust has a different connotation to me then just having a bad draft. Seattle had two picks thru the first what 78 selections? That's usually a recipe for disaster. So if Penny or Rasheem fail miserably they may be considered a bust? I think they both will have decent careers?

4th thru 7th rounders aren't normally considered quality starters. Sure they can surprise us all as well we've seen 1st rounders be busts. But odds are much better of 1-3 making an impact.

Dissly could be an asset if Seattle gets back to the run first option. Otherwise he's just another TE.

The rest of the draft, meh. Could someone surprise us? Sure they could. I remember a guy getting picked # 199 that's done pretty well.

I'm curious what he thinks now too. Where's the popcorn when you need it? LOL.

~Players don't matter, it's all about the coaches ~The Stalking Assistant GM~

You should go back to playing your video games.

It's the coaches that get the very best out of their players. Both are equally important and I don't play video games.

While I agree that later round picks are much less likely to hit, that doesn't mean that they won't.

When it is all said and done the Seahawks had 1 fewer pick in the first 4 rounds that most other teams. Certainly that hurts but it's not like the rest of their draft can't be productive because of that.

But you said that they didn't have a good draft which speaks to more than just missing their 2nd round draft pick.

A good draft is one in which you get 2 starter quality players out of it. A bad draft is one in which you get zero starter quality players out of it.

I also failed to respond to this part...
Combine that with a relatively new offensive line that will take time to gel that takes a couple years.

The Seahawks are returning at least 4 and perhaps 5 starters to their OL this year. The only new player slated to compete for a starting job is Fluker. If anything this is the most cohesive group the Seahawks will have had to start the season in several years. That doesn't mean it will be a good OL. That remains to be seen.

I can't put that all on coaching. That is a lack of talent to not even know to get in the way and at least slow the guy down. The Seahawks have had some of the worst talent in the league on the OL. So when you combine that with the chaos that could be bad coaching and boom it is what the Seahawks have shown.

There is no question that the Seahawks have a talent deficiency on the OL.

HOWEVER, when 60% of your line is simply not blocking anyone in a ZONE blocking scheme I will lay that 100% on the coaches.

True great coaches get the best out of players but if they can't make something out of nothing when the talent is not there. I put much more emphasis on the players than the oline coach. I've seen Oline coaches go from having highly ranked olines to some of the worst. They didn't all of sudden forget how to coach. They just have crap to work with. Our oline in 2015 particularly the first half of the season was as bad as anything Seattle ever fielded and that oline coach had previously coached highly ranked olines in Washington.

Exactly. There are great players that have overcome bad coaching and there have been good coaches that had to try and overcome a lack of talent. It is easier for the first one to work out. When you are working with an entire position group and have very little talent well good luck.

So why, oh why, can't we skip past the bullshit, and just start here?

I agree. I just don't see that much disparity between NFL coaches that would cause such a shift given a particular talent level. In 2015 we probably had the worst right side oline in the league. There were often times two or more defenders running opposed to the QB on a pass play. It wasn't the coach, it was the god awful players that were starting. In Seattle's case I can't really say because I don't follow it that closely. I do follow the Raiders so it will be interesting to see how Cable does in Oakland this year.

Dissly for sure, the only good UW draft pick that done shit is a guy they kicked off in Peters.

But there are plenty of examples of great coaches elevating the talent of the unit they are coaching or the team they are coaching.

Alex Gibbs is, IMO, a perfect example of that. Of course he isn't a magician so there has to be SOME talent, but he maximized what he got out of that talent.

Corey Dillon? Olin Kreutz? Lawyer Milloy?

Yes, all of those guys played in college in the past decade. USC is great at turning out QB's because Carson Palmer played there right?
