How was Brian van Gorder as a DC?

We just amicably parted ways with ours and I have a hunch he is the replacement

Uncle Rico can throw a football over a mountain.

He was brutally bad in the end with Notre Dame.

Never been impressed with his coaching acumen. If he ever gives it up he should have a profitable career working for a hospital. They'd hire him to stand on the corner and make people sick because he's quite possible the ugliest human being on the planet.

The only place where he was a good college DC was at Georgia. He was pretty awful at both Auburn and Notre Dame.

I'm pretty sure Notre Dame folks badly wanted him fired for most of his tenure there

for your sake hopefully the rumors aren't true

He only lasted one year before Chizik's tenure ended. You should ask Georgia fans he was there longer.

He was a defensive analyst this season and last week it was mentioned he was joining the staff so everyone figured someone wouldn't be retained. Found out today Spencer and the safeties coach are gone so it's either him or we hire a DC to coach safeties.

Also of interest Chad Glasgow is TCU's DC/safeties coach. He is also a Poke alum. I think he would be our no. 1 target but honestly either would be an improvement

Glascow spent one year as Tubberville's DC at Texas Tech. It didn't go too well.

That was Tech though. When was the last time they had a capable defense. I'm guessing he learned a little from Patterson after that experience

That was my point. He is/has been good under Patterson's tutelage. He was with Patterson prior to Tech and went back to Fort Worth after the Tech disaster.

Or maybe Glascow just couldn't work under Tubberville's tutelage. Don't know.

We've seen before where some assistants are good under a specific head coach and that doesn't transfer elsewhere. Manny Diaz comes to mind.

Plus there was probably some interference from Coach Chizik on that side of the ball. His year at Auburn is probably not a good indicator of his coaching abilities, good or bad.

I watched the Notre Dame series of Showtime and he was the DC at the time. It seemed he struggled with adjustments and I wasn’t surprised when he was replaced later.

Terrible coach, he was a complete failure and a lot of the 4-8 season at Notre Dame in 2016 started with Kelly not firing him before the season. Players said learning his scheme made learning Chinese easy.

You’d be better off with Corky from Life Goes On as your DC.

Jaylon Smith and Max Redfield were basically wasted under him.

He did shut Michigan out though. The rest of his tenure sucked though.

That and he was a lousy recruiter. Said he wasn’t big on it. Took time away from him perfecting his scheme no one could understand.

This bothers me more. He never stays at a place long but if he isn't awful and gets us some dudes for the next guy it's probably better than Spencer. If he doesn't recruit though I'm less excited about the upside.

The crystal ball is cloudy on who we end up with now so no idea if he ends up getting the job or not.
