$600,000 for a strength/conditioning coach???

Every single coach on Poor Aggie's roster is making double or triple what they are worth in value.
Who the fuck was bidding against them for all these insane contracts?? Nobody.

They bid against themselves with massive overpayments everywhere.
If they dont win 10+ games a year every year, it will be Colorado levels of financial misery.

Not even Texas/Ohio State/Alabama with their near infinite resources are willing to spend money like aTm.

Funny. I never would have even thought about that guy. It would be a different story if they went after your OL coach

From everything I've heard on the radio over the years and today. He gets a ton of credit for OU's success over the 19 years Stoops was at OU. If a player wanted to complain about Schmitty to Stoops he just said "I don't want to here it". Schmitty was a coach that was untouchable.

Huge loss for us. The guy ran his department and every coach left him alone. I'm not sure LR, even knows what all Smitty did. Every NFL team has bragged about how OU players show up in shape and ready. Plus he is the only coach to have daily contact with every player, during the off season.

He's still just an S&C guy.......a dime a dozen in coaching circles.

What I don't think a lot of aggy fans have figured out yet.....

They are paying some older coaches insane money. I GUARANTEE those coaches see retirement on the horizon and that huge payday as the downpayment on that nice condo in southern Florida.

This staff has disaster written all over it. Because there is virtually no way this works out for them if they aren't playing for the NC every single year.

Not really true towards the end. Coach BB was irate when he first got OU about the OL group regime. Schmitt fought against it with BB and lost. Also fought against Coach Byrd coming in, and lost that one too. Even butted heads with Lincoln this year too. If he can get that kind of money, shoot, power to the man. Thanks for your contribution.

How do you know? Also why do you feel they were better now than when Shcmitty got to work their asses off?

Either way it will play out next season. I feel that tam will be better prepared than they have been in years.

They don't know Fisher. They'll learn though.

Reminds me of the mid-70's when the Redskins hired George Allen.

The 'Skins owner was quoted..."I gave him an "unlimited budget" and he over spent it."

Have the rules changed to where the HC's have as much access to the players year round as the S&C coach does now?

If not, then this is a lil bigger deal than some think imo.

Not the coach I was looking for to leave but it's a start. Good luck to him.

Strength coaches are the babysitters of a program. They spend more time with the kids than the coaches. Stoops trusted him to set the tone he wanted. That doesn't mean he was great at Strength and Conditioning. I have never heard anyone say OU had a cutting edge S&C department.

This is a big loss

Guy has a rep as 1 crazy bastard, not always in a good way. He is just another meathead S&C guy. I have never heard about him being cutting edge. I don't think it will affect OU in the slightest and have actually end up helping the program

Lol you guys are bozos

I remember how soft Bama was before Scott Cochran became our S&C Coach. IMO, he's worth every penny of his $525,000 salary.

The S & C Coach's value is calculated on how strong and conditioned your players are.

It is not valued on what type of baby sitter he is. There isn't one S&C coach in the country
that doesn't go into the off season without a written plan placed in front of them by the
HC of what they want them to do in regard to "keeping an eye" on the players.

If the truth were known...schools fire too many OC or DC and not enough S&C coaches.

I've always believed and discovered that the QB doesn't get sacked or the RB can't pick up
a first down on 3rd and 1, not because the OC doesn't understand X's and O's but because
the linemen aren't strong enough to knock the defense off the ball.

And then to make matters worst...once the OC or DC understand that their players don't
have the needed strength, conditioning and quickness to be effective blocking certain plays
they are forced to alter their play calling. Aaaaahhhhh defenses will pick up on that real
quick like.

If I wanted to be an effective HC, My S&C coach would be one of my highest paid coaches.
And he would know coming in that he'll be the first to go if we can't outmuscle someone at
the l.o.s.

You wrong on the babysitter comment. These guys set the tone, because they are with the players more than anyone. Babysitter was probably not the right word. They are important to the culture. My point is great S&C guys are rare. The ones that are pushing the boundaries. I will just ask a couple questions and see what people respond with

1. Could OU physically impose their will on people?
2. Has this been a team that was known for their strong 2nd half play?

IF you answer "No" to those questions, than this is not a big deal

They set the culture and tone in the weight room. No place else. I could hire
a 20-year old coed for 25 bucks an hour and give her a list of routes that I want
my QB's and receivers to work on. She just needs to monitor them and report back
to me if anybody screws off. The players will know she has "implied" power. i.e...
she's gonna tell and the HC is gonna come down on us.

No...she won't be able to correct them or help with their mechanics and neither
will the S&C coach. I want my QB coach teaching my QB...NOT my S&C coach.

The S&C coach is a babysitter or cheerleader out on the field...his coaching responsibilities
are in the weight room. Culture...Tone...Yeah Buddy...when their biceps and thighs grow
they get more confidence in their abilities and themselves. They're not afraid of anybody
on the field of play. That attitude comes with body development.

If they have a drinking problem and troubles with the girl friend...call a Priest.

You happen to disagree with most Head Coaches, but so be it. We can agree to disagree

Schmitty was S&C coach on 3 different teams that won National Titles. He is good.
