I would suggest getting league pass or something. This kid is pretty exciting. I'm sitting here in disbelief half the time. I've been watching the team a long time and he has the makings of a superstar.

You called Gobert before he broke out.

So if you say he's good, you're probably right.

I've only seen Mitchell once or twice this year.

But here's what concerns me.

He reminds me of Kevin Martin, Eric Gordon, or Jamal Crawford.

What I mean by that is those guys could play 37 minutes a game, but other than scoring, would have 1 rebound, 1 assist, no steals, no blocks.

For how many minutes he plays sometimes, I expect 6 or 7 assists, or 5-7 rebounds, or 4 steals, or a block.

To me, a star (and not just a good player) can fill it other areas when playing heavy minutes in a game.

I'm not sure Mitchell does that enough.

As for defense, I love defense from guards, because I think they're the most important. The longer a guard can stop the ball from getting in the paint, the more likely the opposing team will have a bad possession and come up with a bad shot.

But, I have seen too many players who looked like they would be good defensive players, only for them to not continue it in future years.

So, I'm wary of claims that a rookie is a good defender. Because for most rookies, the best way to show your coach you deserve more playing time, is to be a good defender. Coaches like that.

Will he show the same defense when he's a 3rd year player, and he's a regular part of the starting lineup and having a big role? Or will he "save" his defense for offense?

I think many players stop playing defense by their 2nd or 3rd year, once they've established themselves in the rotation.

I also don't think much of today's perimeter players in terms of defense.

Even Kawahi Leonard, is good, but not a great defender to me.

Same with most players. They're not as good as the guys in the 90s or early 2000s.

The Thunder, with Westbrook and George on the perimeter, have finally reminded me of the older defensive teams.

But I also have to be cynical and ask, Westbrook and George are veterans. What took them so long in their careers to play defense like this?

Yes, both had some good tools on defense, but they didn't apply them consistently. They were "good for this era", but not great when compared to all time greats.

The Thunder have their best DRTG in the Oklahoma City era, 102.4, 3rd in the league.

But again, I ask why did it take Westbrook and George playing together for them to be good? Both should have elevated their teams (Thunder, Pacers) like this before.

(The Pacers had great DRTGs, but I didn't think they were that great defensively.)

So, these are reasons why I'm not on the Mitchell train yet. I want to see a more well rounded game when playing big minutes, for me to consider him a star. And I want to see if he'll still play defense next year or his 3rd year.

(I don't know what to think of his defense yet as I've only seen him a few times.)

Donovan is about as uncanny of a scorer as I've ever seen. He can drive. He can come off a screen square up and hit the deep 3 in motion. And, he can hit the deep 3. I've never seen someone evolve so fast. He looks like Lillard. Or, possibly even D Wade. He had 5 steals last night, and I think 7 deflections. And, he scored 31 with George and Roberson guarding him. At 6'2" scoring against that height is impressive.

The Thunders defense was damn impressive last night overall as well.

I'll be watching tomorrow but might be delayed off DVR. I don't get off work until 7 pacific.

Gobert looked like a giraffe on roller skates last night. He killed us, fumbling and flailing all over the place.

Mitchell is getting stats outside of scoring recently and is shooting better and more consistently.

He didn't shoot well until recently, though.

What are his rebounds, assists, steals, blocks average over that span, as well as his +/-?

You might also have to have a special section in your game by game MVPs, called "The Mitchell Report".

Even if he's already a MVP or HM, just an extra analysis on how he did.

Since he's our guy to watch for this year.

(There was a report with a similar name send to the MLB commissioner's office.)

@nuraman00 - Mitchell is no Oscar Robertson or Kirilenko, but he has contributed elsewhere, starting with a few games before the following stretch: Donovan Mitchell 2017-18 Game Log | Basketball-Reference.com

I think that's the thing. I want him to be a star like Robertson or Kirilenko.

Otherwise he falls into that Eric Gordon, Kevin Martin, Jamal Crawford, Ben Gordon bucket.

His steals are better than those guys, but I also mentioned I've seen too many rookies who looked like they would be good defenders, only for them to abandon it by their 2nd or 3rd year.

I think your last paragraph is fair, but just make sure you don't develop a bias or fault him for others disappointing you. Don't proclaim him the next big thing, but don't let him be paying for others sins, typecast, etc. too early. Don't make him overcome that. Just put it on the back burner and evaluate him later, in my opinion. I've seen too many narratives in the NFL and NBA to not be wary of them. Like Karl Malone said of Derrick Favors, let him be Carlos Boozer, not Karl Malone. Or at least I think he said that cause I can't understand him. Just kidding. He might've been saying something about being second-best, I'm not sure. Let me ax him next time I see him. (That is in no way a reference to his race. I have just heard him say ax instead of acts.)

(For full disclosure, he actually said that Carlos Boozer should not be compared to anyone and just let him be Carlos Boozer.)

Thanks.

I'm tired of saying that the most recent great two way PGs were Baron Davis (only the Hornets version, the Golden State version and the Clippers version had abandoned it) and Chauncey Billups.

Both of those guys have been out of the league for years.

I want someone current to talk about.

Some might put Chris Paul and Kyle Lowry in there. Chris Paul is a good defensive player, but I prefer bigger guards.

And I think Lowry's defense is more a little above average, than great.

Others like Conley Jr. and Jeff Teague are good for their era, but not great.

Hmm, Mitchell is 6'3. Good, since I like size in PGs.

Also, Lebron James is a good defensive PG, but not great. Maybe if he didn't have to do so much on offense, but I can only analyze on what they do, not "what if".

Tyreke Evans was also another one of my "hopefuls", but didn't live up to the "great" hope I had.

So, I'm hoping Donovan Mitchell can make me talk about someone current again.

How did you highlight that stretch like that?

Yeah, I've seen it, I have him in some fantasy leagues. I just am not sure he'll keep it up.

I'll be more convinced if he can do those with Gobert and Hood on the floor, during a similar stretch of games.

Bump?

Also, what do you think about adding a special section in at least some of your game MVps section, for Mitchell?

Like any extra notes or streaks or something.

What you feel about two way PGs is how I feel about 8+ APG point guards on the Jazz. 8 USA far cry from the 14.5 Stockton had, but it's something considering Snyder's offense is not set up that way. Rubio taunted and teased the first 5 games to only fall flat in Snyder's systems. I mean 25-40 point wins don't have 8+ assists, but more players are getting 3+ than before, I think.
