No bigger positive than Mike Zunino? Mariners reward him with pay raise, report says

Of all the ups and downs of this past Mariners season – that now has them with the longest playoff drought in American major professional sports – manager Scott Servais said at least one good thing came from it.

“There’s no bigger positive this year than Mike Zunino,” Servais said just after the season ended.

And now Zunino will get a bit of a raise to show for it.

He and the Mariners agreed to a $2.975 million deal, ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick reported Thursday morning. The Mariners have not confirmed it.

Easy guy to root for. This organization hasn’t done the best job handling him but I’m hopeful he builds off his last year. Guy was tied for third in catcher WAR behind Sanchez and Posey. If he has another year close to last year I’d start thinking extension

I think they should have taken one step further and offered him a deal for 5 years for around $20M-$25M. Not sure if he would accept, but it sounds good for both sides and gives him financial stability. Time to lock up the future.

Isn't he actually doing the club a solid by signing this? I'm under the impression if he didn't and ended up in arbitration next year he'd end up with much more?

Yea I'm not sure he would either. If he ends up building off last year and being around a top 5 catcher then that's a huge bargain for the mariners. At the same time his sample size of good play isn't that good, which is why I hesitated on the extension. Maybe its because I am not used to worrying about extending home grown guys because our development has been so shit. Its happened like once in ten years so its tough to gauge

Nobody left down on "the farm" and let's face it the front office ain't that good at shopping the FA pool.....
Phils just paid Cameron Rupp 2 mil to avoid arbitration, essentially the same player IMO. I guess it's only a mil tho.

He was projected to get 3.2 mil by MLBTR so it’s actually probably a bargain. Catcher isn’t exactly a deep position

Steamer and ZiPS aren't big fans of him in 2018. After hitting .251/.331/.509 with a 126 wRC+ in 2017, Steamer projects him to hit .224/.298/.450 (100 wRC+). ZiPS has him at .217/.294/.447 (98 wRC+). They still project him to be a 2-2.5 WAR catcher. I think most of the reason they're pessimistic is because of the high strikeout rate (36.8% last year) and they don't believe his .355 BABIP is sustainable (his MLB average is .273).

That being said, even if his 2018 is in line with those projections, he'd still be a bargain at $3M.

A bargain? Right.....they probably wouldn't be able to find a .200 hitting catcher with random power that handles the staff well.....

Right, I'm hopeful last year is a turn in the right direction but not convinced just yet. That's why I am in the camp of waiting to think about an extension till midseason or after the year. However I don't give a damn about his batting average. If his OPS is around .750 and he's around a 2.5 WAR player that's fine. In this market right now you are roughly spending $8 mill a year per 1 WAR or something close to that. Probably even more scarce for catcher. That's why a guy like Russell Martin got way overpaid the other year and Zunino was much better then Martin last year.

The bar for hitting catchers isn't very high, especially the last three years (league wRC+ at the position has been under 90, Zunino's career average). Most catchers have contact issues, though Zunino's are a little more glaring. But he also has more power than the majority of catchers. And if he can maintain his 2016 or 2017 production, he's one of the best hitting catchers in the league.

This. $3M is nothing in today's game.

I read Paxton signed a similar deal for either 4 or almost 4. Truly not bad for what arbitration would have netted them. Their agents either blow or are trying hard to get the word out these are easy guys to work with contract wise.

Eh I'm sure once Zunino starts batting around .275 we'll trade him for a few shitty prospects and Zunino will go on to a HOF career.

Or Jerry will convert him to a SP so he can have a controllable and versatile number 5 starter.

Wasn't that long ago that we were all calling him K-nino and groaning every time he came to the plate. Is he finally over the hump? What is acceptable from him this year?

120 games started
20-25 HR
65-75 RBI
.750+ OPS

He has the potential for Sanchez-type power but we should never raise our expectations that high.

LOL. Wouldn't surprise me.....much. But, on a serious note, I wouldn't mind him getting a little work at first base.
