Trying to find out, nothing as of yet to indicate he was battling some kind of illness, in fact, it was well documented that he was quite the fitness nut.

I was working the lazy loaf and kettle cafe in calgary, ZZ used to come in quite often. Fairly quiet but nice. He signed a big contract with the Flames and I was joking to a regular customer that he was not worth the money and was often injured, my customer raised his paper over his face, I didn't turn around. "Zarley is there isn't he" ....he nodded. "Heard it all didn't he" the paper nodded..... I turned around and ZZ was sitting there with a magazine smiling. He got up tucked it under his arm and started to leave. "You heard Zarley" ..."yep" he smiled again...."see you tomorrow" ... A big smile "yep" .... I bought him the next 3 lunches lol.... He was a nice guy RIP

Sad day. One of my all-time favorite Penguins. I hated the trade that sent him to Hartford for Francis at the time.

Unfortunately I loved that trade for the Penguins even though it cost them Zalapski and Cullen.

The trade was great for the Penguins as it led to 2 Cups, but that trade and the Rob Brown trade to Hartford saw my two favorite Pens of the late 80s leave. I didn't foresee what the trade would mean to the Pens, I just saw my favorites leaving the team.

Wow RIP. Always seemed like a likeable guy. Had a great shot, too.

Zarley was a good example of the old NHL. As a Hab an 80 year old Zalapski was able to grab and hold onto an in his prime Jagr without being called. Habs won that series 4-2

Zarley Zalapski is a top 5 "coolest" NHL name of any player. Sad to see him pass at such a young age. RIP Zarley.

Preliminary indications are that he died from complications related to a heart condition.
