WVU seems to be coming together at the right time. 3 wins in a row with 8 more VERY critical games remaining. I say we need 20 wins to get invite to the big dance, so our seeding in the B12 tourney will be critical to our post-season success. Here is what remains and how I think we will do (I posted details elsewhere so I won't repeat them here). Please post you assessment of how this teams finishes.....

Feb. 8 @ Kansas (L)
Feb. 10 Iw St (W)
Feb. 15 @ Tx (W)
Feb. 22 Bay (W)
Feb. 26 @ Iw St (L)
Mar. 1 TCU (W)
Mar. 5 @ OK (L)
Mar. 8 Kansas (W)

In my dreams - we go 5 - 3 (W-L listed above). In my head, 4 - 4 is more likely and I could live with that. :hope:

Meat of the schedule coming up. I'm thinking 3-5 over the home stretch. Baylor and TCU should be wins but we'll be an underdog for every other game. Anything more than 4-4 would be an amazing coaching job.

Get one on the road and win 3 of 4 at home. That would be 4-4 and I would take that. That would give you 18 wins heading into the Conference Tourney and a 10-8 regular season conference record. You need a winning conference record IMO to get in the tourney. With our SOS, 1 win in the B12 Tourny and 4-4 the rest of the way, will give this team a 19-14 record. The marquee name of Bobby Huggins would carry the team over the hump and into the NCAA Tourny. Anything less than that and you can make reservations for NY and the NIT.

With 2 games of the 8 complete, 1 on the road and 1 at home - WVU is 1-1.
Simply amazing smashing of I St at home with some impressive scoring and an even more impressive Defensive effort. I hoped for a split with Iowa St so this falls in line with my prediction. Could a sweep be possible?

The game @ Texas this weekend is huge. WV needs to win at least 1 of the remaining 3 road games. This would be a good one to get another Top 20 win as well. Go 'Eers!

TEXAS 88, WVU 71: Javan Felix scored 18 points and No. 19 Texas used another impressive offensive performance to beat West Virginia 88-71 on Saturday night.

Not only did WV not win on the road @ TX, they didn't have the ability to keep up with TX. Their shooting was anemic in comparison (39.7% vs. 57.9%). In WV's defense, most teams are not going to drop shots in the 60% range. It seems WV caught the Horns on a very hot shooting night. The teams were almost dead even on free throws. WV rebounds and assists Vs. TX were not even close.
Thay closed the gap to start the 2nd half - but Texas pulled away with an 8-0 run and the game wasn't ever really close again.

Bottom line -Texas had the big man and WV had no answers for his presence underneath. I think that loss ensures that WV can finish 4-4 at best. I don't see a road win with OK and I St remaining. And even the 4 home games - that will include defeating Kansas. No cake walk by any means.

Ok, no one is giving us a shot at making the dance, so I decided to dive into the numbers and see what our resume looks like. Here you go folks.

At present, these are our numbers:
RPI: 72
SOS: 35

15-11 Overall
3-9 vs. Top 50
1-0 vs. 51-100
5-1 vs. 101-200
6-1 vs. sub 200

Now looking at those numbers, we are not a tourney team. Too many games against weak opponents. Half the sub 200 teams are sub 300... plus a bad loss. NIT here we come.

We have 3 more games against RPI top 50 teams (all 26 and above) remaining. If we could somehow take two of those...5-10 vs the top 50 doesn't look so bad.

Still, we suck on the road, and that loss to VT is now crippling. If we do manage to get to the dance I think we'll be a quick one and done. I think I'd rather go to the NIT and let these guys pick up a win or two. (Or the whole thing)

Lest not forget about the trip to KC for the Big 12 Tourny. A good showing there will bolster your case as well. Bottom line is we need to win and win now. Clearly this teams weakness is the inside play and its inability to shoot on the road. The teams in the Big 12 know how to beat us and that is by pounding it inside and raping the glass. Kansas and Texas have done just that.

As of Feb 21st, with a current record of 15-11

For the NIT, WVU needs to end up with 2 More wins.

I think 1 more win guarantees WVU in the CBI tournament.

I think WVU will need either:
A. Four more wins with a Big 12 Tournament Final Four Finish
OR
B. Five wins with a loss in the Round of 8 in the Big 12 Tournament

It's that simple.

Well, the loss to Baylor seals our fate. Barring a hot streak that takes home a Big XII tournament championship, we'll be NIT bound at best.

Yep - Baylor was a 'MUST WIN' game for WVU to even be considered. And they didn't just lose, AT HOME, they lost BIG to a team they had to beat. They are now 15-12, 7-7 in the B12. A .500 finish may be possible overall, but not in the B12. Of the 4 games remaining, given what happened with Baylor - 1 more win is thinkable, 2 is a streatch, 3 - forget about it. 1-3 down the streatch and this team limps into the tourney against the upper half of the conference. 1 and done..... sad. I thought they were coming together. This may be a team for next year.
