Will Matt Harvey Pitch for a 3rd Team This Year?

That is being offered by my sportsbook. With -235 for "yes" and +185 for "No".

It was phrased "Will Matt Harvey sign + pitch for another team this year?"

This confused the hell out of me and I thought they just somehow missed the news about him being slated for tonight's start vs LA.

I reached out to customer support via chat and I asked which one it was. I was told the wager is dependent on him pitching for a 3rd team. However, even the agent was taken off-guard and admittedly had to check with somebody.

Why the hell would "No" be offered at 1.85 to 1 odds? Cincy is pretty much committed to him for the year, right? Plus, if he burns out of there, unable to even hang in that rotation - is another big league club going to give him a shot to pitch this season?

Probably even furthermore, why would "Yes" be offered at -235. Who would bet with such shitty odds that he pitches for a 3rd team this year, after just having signed with his 2nd?

If he flames out in Cincy, there might be another team willing to give him a chance if its before the trade deadline.

IF he turns it around, Cincy trades him by the deadline 100%.

Ah, okay. This would be the most likely scenario to me.

However, still would take quite a bit and giving it as a heavy favorite is head-scratching. I would say the most two likely scenarios are that he continues to be terrible - or he floats somewhere between average and terrible. Both would seem to render him a Red for the rest of 2018. With (IMO) the second most likely alternative being injured or straight up cut. Not playing until next season.

The only thing Harvey has going for him is an above-average slider. Too many variables and it's not likely Harvey can reinvent himself in 2 months. He's likely to have more negative games than positive ones, probably to the point that he doesn't offer much upside.
I think the Reds got him because they wanted to jingle a little fear in the faces of some of their underachieving pitchers. It's not likely to work. I think they could have done better on a Mesoraco trade.
If Harvey gets to a third team, it's because he's DFA and somebody like the Marlins will get him for the waiver rate.

I doubt it. He's never learned how to pitch. His last start was against the Braves, and every fast ball he threw, he was looking at the radar gun.

You've had a bunch of arm troubles, you can't throw upper 90's anymore. If he doesn't realize this, he'll never be a viable starter in the league again, and who wants a diva middle reliever?

His first start was decent, the Doggies are not very good right now. Lots of lazy fly balls and a freak hit lost in the lights. Regardless of anything else, Harvey means a lot to us Reds fans -- not for what he can do but for the idea that the front office is at least trying to fix a problem.
In the past, they've shuttled 4A starters back and forth from Louisville and it's been at best embarrassing. When your team is 10-27, you look for any stray coins on the street.
Harvey is not a solution but he's got the fans talking about a 4-game winning streak. If your team is doing better than that, we're happy for you.
The goal right now for the Reds is a semblance of competitive respectability, meaning -- capable of winning 2 out of 3 against anybody, even if they don't get it done.
Harvey is at least experienced.

If he is even half good, the Yes is a great bet

Cincy is banking on moving him knowing no chance of signing him

I agree, Harvey does good as a Red he'll be moved at the deadline. Wonder what the return would be.

His start in SF was anything but encouraging, though he did run into a team that hit more line drives than is realistic for any team. He did pitch out of some jams but we shall see on his first trip into Cincy, which is a little more homer friendly. Again, the Giants were unworldly, almost like they knew what was coming.

The problem is that unless the Reds make a trade, there's not much behind him. Brandon Finnegan is next in line and he's not getting it done in AAA.

I'd look for some kind of trade that doesn't include Harvey. He's not going to be worth much if they DFA him.

His metrics are encouraging enough. He can probably be a useful bullpen piece

I don't think the Reds would get much of a return if all anybody wants him for is middle relief.
