The OP's comparing to Van Halen is screwy though. Why is judging them subjectively any different, from you know, judging Nickelback subjectively?

Not sure if you're being serious or not but I would likely attend a Backstreet Boys concert before I would ever attend a Nickleback concert. Don't get me wrong, I generally prefer rock over boy band crap but I can't stand Nickleback. As cheezy as they were, I could probably stomach the Backstreet Boys a lot easier.
