Eaton nets them Giolito, Lopez & Dunning?! That's the type of haul I expected for Sale... not Eaton.

Now they have the #1&#3 prospects (via MLB.com) and added some depth in their rotation for the future. ChiSox fans should be thrilled.

Nothing against Eaton, he's a solid everyday MLB OF'er. No way he should've costed that much tho.

Now they need to sell all-out and trade Quintana, Robertson, Frazier and Abreu. That farm system is going to be the best in baseball by the end of this offseason.

im surprised to hear the nats plan on putting him in center. he was a butcher there his entire time with the sox. he went to right field and turned into on of the better defensive outfielders in baseball

I think Lopez will be better than Giolito. I'm sure Giolito will be a fine pitcher, but the results don't match the scouting reports and his 2016 campaign was kinda meh.

Eaton loses some value moving to CF, but he's still an all-star caliber player.

Talk about a bad move by the Nats. Made no sense at all.

Not really... the Nats needed some outfield help. Werth is declining, Michael Taylor and Chris Heisey are scrubs. Trea Turner played very well, but I'd imagine he'll be moving over to shortstop. Eaton loses some value in the move from RF to CF (he was a legit Gold Glover in right field, but he's still a strong defensive CF), but he's still a 3-4 WAR CF. Eaton's not a free agent until 2020 (with options for 2020 and 2021).

The Nats did give up a lot, but there's always some level of uncertainty with pitching prospects. I think it's a good trade for both sides.

Yeah but with the same package they could of got McClutchen. Eaton is ok but nothing special. Good defensive player. I dont know they gave up a lot for him.

But would you rather one year of McCutchen coming off the worst season of his career, or three years of Adam Eaton coming off his best season of his career (and one that was much better than McCutchen's 2016)?

yeah there are other factors in this. U are right. 3 years of Eaton is nice at a good price. very true. Good point.

And he can hit and run the bases very well. He had a 117 wRC+ and .362 OBP over the last three years. He's been one of the most valuable outfielders in baseball over the last three years.

I would expect McCutchen to rebound next season, but he's still coming off a legitimately bad year. Also, there's the matter of McCutchen being a free agent soon and Eaton won't be a FA for at least three years. There's plenty of reason to think the Nats overpaid, but Eaton has more trade value right now than McCutchen does. That would have been a horrendous overpay for Cutch if you ask me.

Oh I think the Nationals gave up too much, I just think that McCutchen is less valuable right now as a trade chip.

They paid for the 6 win play, and he's probably more of a 3-4 win player.
