Ok, so a career 3.36 ERA and a season where he had a 4.26 in a far easier league to pitch, all of a sudden absolutely unhittable

Suspicious is all

or it's a small sample size

he'll be very hard pressed to sustain that kind of strikeout rate and when it dips his ERA will as well, but he might be a better pitcher than he was in 2015 IMO.

pitchers are weird. Cliff Lee was a top propsect and it took him years to finally put it together at the major league level. Look at Rich Hill in 2015-17 as well though he's struggling right now. Helps that Hill has always had a devastating curveball.

True

If it was just JV
Or just Morton
Or Just Cole

I could see it

Collectively? Strange

And if it wasn't floating out there from Bauer and some others, I wouldn't even give it a thought honestly

again, they just might have a very good pitching coach (and front office). Astros and Indians throw more offspeed pitches than fastballs. Remember when McCullers threw 24 consecutive curveballs in the ALCS?

makes sense to throw a lot of breaking pitches IMO, especially in this home run happy era.

Interestingly enough, 2 of those guys come from a place known for dealing really well with pitchers

Who is it Ray Miller in Pitt?

What's his name

Hope you're right and he starts sucking

(Although I think you're implying the opposite)

So, a good pitching coach can't make a difference with more than 1 pitcher?

There is something going on, Im convinced

Justin Verlander - HOF career, but was seen as a pitcher on the downside in his last days in Detroit, now easily pitching better than he ever has

Gerrit Cole - Mid 4's ERA in a far inferior offensive league last season, now absolutely unhittable

But Charlie Morton takes the cake, as he continues to come out of nowhere to be one of the best pitchers in baseball

Something not right
I don't think anyone who watched JV closely felt that way. Two years ago, yeah, different story.

I anticipated greatness from him down the stretch last year and coming into this year.

Ray Searage, he is pretty good I think, but Cole and Morton this year knocks him down a peg I guess.

I hope my Pirates hire one of their coaches this offseason just to see what they are doing.

I always thought Charlie Morton got a raw deal in Pittsburgh and with Pirates fans. But there's no effing way the guy I saw pitch with the Pirates added that much velocity once he turned 33 fucking years old.

To be frank this is why the Gerrit Cole deal has worked out for the Pirates. Highly doubt he'd be this lights out in Pittsburgh, and they got a quality third baseman, a lights out reliever, an OF racking in AA and another arm who could be a mainstay in the rotation.

This. He had the ability and when he used his slider effectively we saw it in Pittsburgh but truthfully I think he wanted out since day one. So some of it was drive/want.

I kind of do think something is going on at this point. Can't prove anything being it's such a small sample, but some of this shit does make me wonder, I can't lie. Morton being dominant? Huh? Granted... his FIP is still 3.40. It just continues to raise eyebrows is all.

Verlanders ERA is more than 2 runs better as an Astro than his career ERA in Detroit

To say thats unusual for a 35 year old pitcher, would be an understatement

You have to factor in the move from the AL to the NL though.
