I always thought it was a mistake for Ford to discontinue Ranger sales in the United States in 2012.
They sell very well worldwide.
Ford said that due to slow sales and slim profit margins they stopped selling them here. I find that hard to believe because they literally put nothing into that truck for a lot of years.

Now it looks like they are probably bringing it back due to the good demand for the Chevy Colorado and Toyota's Tacoma dominating the market.

I had 2 Rangers over the years and thought they were fantastic vehicles. Nothing but good things to say.

Why give up the market, then try to enter it again.
Or do I have this all backwards.

I never fully bought into Ford's reasoning when it came to the Ranger in NA. They did maintain that there was, and is, a market for a small truck. Ford was concerned about the F-150 sales being cannibalized, but the '15 Aluminum truck has gotten bigger and more expensive. I don't think the current world Ranger will be the model (when it returns in 2018 or something) since it's somewhere like 7/8 or 9/10 the size of the F, but I also think they could've kept updating the NA version of the Ranger and had something profitable.

Something in size between the old Ranger and the current world Ranger, with a noticable difference in pricing and fuel economy, and count me in.

They basically wrote off the segment and Chevy is showing they were wrong to do so. There are a whole lot of people who like owning a truck, but don't want a full-sized one as a daily driver. If they make the interior nicer and put a better V6 in them, Rangers would sell.

If they want something for the world market that doesn't have a full frame why don't they just make a modern day Ranchero. Someone like me who doesn't need the capacity of a truck, just something that can get 500lbs or so in the back, never tow anything, front cab comfort, and an engine that gets the gas mileage of a car.

Seems like a no brainer.

Hell, Ford is already getting away from conventional design.

The ranger wasn't really just a small truck...it was a cheap one. They're trying to sell big ticket autos. So, I guess they'll try to sell you an Explorer Sport-Trac if you don't need much bed.

For any brand, there needs to be a small CRD diesel truck. Something the size of a Tacoma with a torque laden 35 mph engine would be great. I'd buy one...especially if it had replaceable piston sleeves like that little Italian diesel in the Jeep Liberty in '06 or so.

VW was ahead of their time with this.
Updated looks would help a lot. :pound:

While it's still early too call it a success, I'd hesitate in believing that Chevy has shown Ford they were wrong. They too, gave up the segment and GM are pretty good at throwing as much crap against the wall hoping something sticks. If it turns into a profitable venture over the years, I'd call it more luck than anything.

Supposedly, Mercedes will start selling a small diesel pickup everywhere but here next year. They must know something we don't. I guess few will buy a small truck for 30 grand when you can get an F150 stripped down for just a little more. But Mercedes can get more $.

I would like a late 60s early 70s F100 Ranger for my next project. People want too much for their old C10s...

I've owned a '87 S-10 and a '91 Ranger.

Both were Xtra cabs but the Ranger was a 4x4.

The S-10 was a nicer vehicle in my opinion.

Neither had a long life though. My daughter got hit by a drunk asshole with the S-10, he in a full size GMC Crew cab that walked away with a busted grille. My S-10 was totaled.

The Ranger went to Vancouver with my wife while my son was trying to go to school. She fell asleep at the wheel (long commute, long day) at 65 MPH, went off the road, hit a stump, spun ass to front 180 degrees, then rolled 540 degrees into a ditch and finished upside down with the 2 of them hanging from their seat belts.. Also totaled. 1 week earlier the ditch had 3 feet of water in it.

I will never own another truck again.

Because your family survived wrecks in them?
