I think the referee felt sorry for the player AND also wasn't sure he was hearing things.

He turned off his mike and quietly asked the Texas player one more time....if he was sure.

Rather than let the dumbass broadcast his stupidity over the PA system.
The referee gave him a second chance to quietly affirm the dumbest thing of the season.

I guess technically it could be a punishable offense for the official.
But, it was more like the referee was so stunned by the stupidity he was questioning his own hearing.
